Entering @ Mudro and plan on 2-3 days camping on Gun lake. Tips for that lake from anyone who has fished it in Mid-September. Current weather looks really nice (warm) for this late in the year. I don't know if that will help the fishing, but will make for a nice trip.
Not adverse to going a little further or stopping sooner if another lake might have greater rewards.

I just did 2 trips to this area in the last month. I also fished this area September 2016. Unfortunately, I have had very poor luck finding fish in Gun Lake, specifically.

Last week we fished it for 8 hours non stop using all types of bait, different setups, shallow/deep...everything we could think of. We caught one eater walleye and that was it for Gun. This was my third time fishing this body of water and that was the only fish pulled out.

Now, that doesn't mean it's a bad fishing lake/area, because I know people on this board have done quite well in this lake at times. For what its worth, I've done better fishing Fairy and Boot for walleyes and panfish. I'm sure others will be willing to share their experiences as well....good luck, and you'll enjoy the area no matter what!!

Gun Lake has always been a passover lake on our way to Friday Bay (Crooked Lake). Not sure how long your trip is but we get to Friday Bay in one day. It takes about 6 hours of single portaging, great fishing up there though.

I've talked to a few people who have had good success on Gun Lake with walleyes but I can't confirm.

Have fun!

I have caught fish in Gun but I think both Boot and Fairy are better fishing lakes. Boot in particular is a good walleye lake with lunker potential. As you head north from Fairy at the end of the portage you will notice a dramatic increase in the clarity of the water, Gun is gin clear. Probably makes it a tougher lake to fish.

I would fish Gun if there's poor weather, as you can do well fishing the structure there, but if the weather is nice, you'll probably strike out and should check out Boot or Fairy.

Horse is another good option too.

If I was targeting a lake for a couple days of fishing, Gun is probably the last in that area on my list.

Fished it last week for smallmouth and did pretty good on smallies using cranks and top water. The walleye fishing sucked while we were there, but we fished Gun, Fairy, Boot, and Fourtown and the walleye fishing sucked on them all.

Well got back and unfortunately got the "don't fish Gun" after I had already headed that way. Weather was fantastic and we fished it hard for 2 days. NOTHING>>>>> Caught enough for a meal on Fourtown on the way out....
The trade off of no fish and great weather may have been worth it. We had a great trip, but the fishing was poor... for the 4 days we were there 9/10 - 9/14/2017

Fewer fish being caught this fall, it seems.
