Got back about 5 days ago from an 8 day trip to Wapikamaski [sp] lake on Ontario. Wapi is almost straight east of Wabakimi. The 75 miles of logging road were in good shape but it still took us almost 4 hours to drive it. Froze really hard the first night in camp, highs in upper 60's lows in mid 50's the rest of the trip, some rain and always wind and always in our faces. Walleyes were easy to catch, the biggest was 22 inches. Northerns were every where, biggest was 42 inches [caught by me] next biggest 41 inches caught by my son. Several 30 to 38 inchers. Saw one small moose, a mediam sized bear otter, beaver, and several eagles, saw caribou tracks on the sand beaches but no caribou. Good trip in spite of a flat tire when we got back to the truck. Catching a 42 inch Northern out of a canoe is a spinchter tightening experience FRED

I thought I was the only one on this board who did logging road trips. Hello, brother! That's a long, long logging road. Did you encounter any logging trucks? Any photos?

Missmolly, we didn't see any logging trucks but we did see several places where they were logging and tracks on the road, but it was barely light out when we drove most of the road. I did get some pictures of our fish but I don't have a home computer and can only use the computers at work so I don't know if "Mother Mayo" would approve of useing their computers, plus being extremely "computer challenged" I really have no clue how to get the pictures off my camera onto the board. If you want to see the pictures email me your address and I will mail some to you. FRED

Sounds like a neat sort of trip. How did you decide on a lake? How were you advised on the drivability of the road?

That sounds like a fantastic trip. I'm curious how this trip would differ logistically from a Quetico trip. Were there a lot of relatively established campsites? I looked at the map, and there are a few parks up there that could make for a nice trip, like the Kopka River. They're within a days drive from my home in Minneapolis, but maybe a bit less populated?

Sent an email, Fred.

amhacker22, I don't know how Fred decides, but I zoom in with Google Earth and hope for the best. Sometimes I turn around and sometimes I should have turned around! You may camp wherever you wish. Sometimes that are sites. Sometimes not.

Hi Fred,
I presume you went up through the north side of Harmon? So how long does it take you to get from Harmon into Wapi? We have been going up in that area for years, but stay on Williams and Arrow. In June we went through Arrow and a few unnamed lakes to Sunshine which flows into the top of Wapi. Never went in, but we have discussed it. How far up do you go in Wapi? Did you run into any of the boaters staying in the camps? Often wondered if they would be friendly to someone who portaged into the lake that they fly into.

Glad you had a good trip
Luke

Miss Molly no e-mail as yet. From the Harmon landing to the top of the Wapi portage is about 2 hours. The Wapi portage is 100 yards or so, easy walk. We camp at the north end on a long sand point where there used to be a trappers shack, was burned down 2 years ago, doubt it was arson because they took all the tar paper off the roof and all the beds, stove ect out,and left them in a pile next to the cabin. The road is always "drive able" but bridges do wash out, beavers dam culverts and flood the roads, trees fall across the road, anyone who has driven logging roads knows it's all part of the adventure.Crown permits needed, you can camp wherever your little heart desires or darkness sets in or your simply to pooped to go any further. From the SunShine portage to our camp was about a short 2 hour paddle, we stopped to catch some Northerns along the way. The portage is around 100 yards long and an easy walk, we cut a couple of trees out of the portage, bad lands at each end, rocky even wet footing we put some new scratches on the SR17. We went up to where the small creek empties into SunShine but didnt go any further. Did see a bear paddleing back out. The fly-in boaters we have seen have always waved and one year they offered us their crawlers. Next week I'm headed toward the Kopa Park so maybe I can get there and maybe not. FRED

No Miss Molly no email as yet, I even checked the little envelope thingy and my email address showed up. I got an email from one of of our other members about the trip so I guess my email works. I did get an email from another member asking to mark some maps for him, lots of maps and a couple hours marking them. It probably wouldn't taken so long but I got on nogstalic trip on some of them, anywho I marked them and sent them back to him [he sent them with a prepaid return sticker] and I never heard from him I hope he got them.
