I had a chance to get caught up on a little reading as it was raining outside. In the Fall BWJ Stu goes on and on about a new lure he had great success with. It was the River 2 Sea Whopper Plopper. Has anybody tried them and if so did they work as good as advertised? I would be all game for bringing 1 or 2 along next summer but the price seems a little steep.

Dean I used a large version of the Whopper Plopper on Irregular Lake in WCPP to score on a Muskie while trolling it. I have not used the smaller lure in canoe country for bass however. The Whopper Plopper has been around for a while and its fish catching ability is well known. One thing about Stu which I don't question is his transparency. Occasionally he is rather transparent to a fault, a trait which I share on occasion. So if he says he is doing well with it there is little reason to doubt it.
If I were to venture into canoe country anytime in May, June or early july there is little doubt I would have a Whopper Plopper in a rod holder with the rod straight up to keep most of the line out of the water and a Whopper Plopper on braid trailing behind on travel days. I would probably ditch both sets of trebles and put one big "J" style hook with a curly tail threaded on the back of the hook. This would make for easy fish releases and less fuss at portage landings. Definitely a bang-em lure.........just tell the missus that the after church luncheon will be skipped one week so you can buy a "Whopper Plopper" ;-0
After catching lots of big bass and musky on the large musky size tail prop baits I had always wanted a smaller size. The smaller whopper ploppers came along and they work great. Right now I use the 130 size for largemouth. It's a great fall bait and a big fish bait. Spring smallmouth also love them.
Get some titanium leaders if you plan to use these up in the BWs. They won't last long with all the pike around. They are too expensive to be donating a bunch of them to pike. Not much different than a torpedo except the sound the prop makes is different with soft plastic vs. metal.
I finally found a few on sale early this year, and these things can be out of this world. Big largemouth, big smallmouth, and enough pike to justify using a leader.
