Do most grocery stores sell powdered eggs? I recall looking one time, but to no avail.

I've had a tough time finding them. Your best bet is local outdoor sporting good store that carries "camp food"... Most of the time then you have to settle for an unflavored scrambled egg mix :(

Hex

P.S. Let us know if you find them in the grocery store somewhere.

I think the best powdered eggs are Wakefield powdered. They can be found at REI or REI.com

I have found a good source for powdered eggs at www.eggstore.com They have several different varieties. Check them out, they are good to work with.

Being as I am a Junior High School Administrator... my cafeteria ladies fixed me up with some powdered eggs and powdered milk. It was some extra they had left at the end of the year. I found that you can take the powdered eggs, put in a little powdered milk, add some bacon bits, dried onions, water to re-hydrate... cook until fluffy place a fair amount into a flour tortilla, place some cheese on top and have one heck of a breakfast burrito!!! Good Eating!!!

On my last trip we took Mountain House powdered eggs. On the drive home the crew discussed how we could improve the next trip. The number one improvement was to not pack powdered eggs. I think I am going with the fresh eggs in cardboard idea this year.

What's wrong with taking real eggs in?

I take real eggs and love them. Some worry about the breakage, weight or spoilage and for them powdered eggs are a good alternative.

I take the cardboard box the eggs come in and trim it to match the amount of eggs I am taking. I usually bring 2 extra eggs then I actually need in case of breakage and I have no problem getting someone to eat them if we have none break (which happens more often than not). I take the cradboard box of eggs and add more cardboard or bubble wrap around them for added cushion. All of this goes in a ziplock bag just in case one breaks to contain the spill. I like cardboard as I can use it in the fire for kindling-vs bubble wrap or plastic which mustbe packed out.

Fresh eggs-especially if you can get them right from the farmer-can last quite a few days even in the summer. Keep them cool inside the pack and the pack in the shade as much as possible and you can enjoy fresh eggs 4 or 5 days into a trip without fear of spoilage.

Can't provide advice on what powered eggs are less gross than others, but at all costs avoid a product called Scrambellettes. They fry up into something resembling a latex omlette and the taste is pretty close to what I imagine latex would taste like. (They do however burn with interesting colors!)

We take in fresh eggs, we use the BWJ cooler system - I'll be taking in 3 dozen for our upcoming 10 day Q loop this summer. The three of us will have fresh eggs for at least the first 7-8 days.
