Oh, sweet spring, that makes the birdies sing! Say, where are the dang birdies? We've gotten 50 inches in the last two snowstorms and this is this morning's snowfall. Luckily, it's not gonna be much, only about five inches. Still, I can feel spring stirring underneath the snow and like many northerners, I still love the seasons. I especially love how snow can give you a new world in hours and I also love how the Maine fall on the coast lingers for months.

If that’s Redosier Dogwood you’ll know spring is coming as the stems become progressively brighter. If that is Gray Dogwood you’ll know spring is coming as the red in the stems fades away.

It's a Fireglow Japanese maple, Inspector. It has fall foliage all summer long, as it's ever-red, and when the sunlight backlights it, it glows, thus the name. If anyone lives in a place where you can grow Japanese maples, which means not too far south and not too far north if you're inland, and you can find this tree (They're hard to find.), buy it and fall in love. Here's a photo:

You will not be disappointed if you buy one. I own 23 Japanese Maples and the Fireglow is my fave. Margaret Bee is another stunner, but only in the spring and fall. The Bee's a dusty red in the summer, as opposed to brilliant red in the shoulder seasons.

I bet it's a Bloodgood. Does it turn bright red in the falls?

Ooo I think you're right! Although the past 2 years we had some early ice storms that seemed to stop the process and freeze the leaves on all winter! Eek! We always worry that something's going to happen and we'll lose it. But after seeing your post I looked at it last night and there are little buds :)

I'm pretty sure it's a Bloodgood as that can happen to Bloodgood leaves and when it does, I go, "Arrrgh!" because there's no show like a fall Bloodgood when all goes according to plan.

Robin showed up by the house yesterday (near GB wis). BWJ showed up today... will be a while before the water gets soft yet.
