If you could only make one more trip to the Boundary Waters:
where would you go...?
what would you do...?
who would go with...?

With so many members here that have been to the BWCA countless times, and collectively have probably seen almost every square inch; I'm intrigued to read the replies. Sharing your experiences gives me an online, virtual peek into the Boundary Waters, that unfortunately, I only get to visit once every year or two. Thanks!!!

the time of year, for me is the key to have the experience i am seeking.
may and late sept, october are the times i go.
i pick a new area every trip, usually travel solo, or with my wife, or another male solo paddler.
i would pick an area and go. it may be an entry i have been to before, but the lakes would be new.
i think i would travel the border lakes.
canada to my left, u.s. to my right.
i don't plan much anymore, i just go.
pick a spot and paddle.
don't over read about it, no pre- trip reports from others in my head before i go.
over planning takes the adventure out of it.
look at a map, pick a spot , then go explore.

Probably Magnetic Lake up the Granite River out through Big. Sag. I would get a RABC and a Canadian FIshing License. But I haven't been to West bdub, East bdub, Sawbill trail, or Frost River.
Quetico
Falls Chain to Kawnipi. But that is the only trip I've made in Quetico so far.
I would go with my son and daughter and their spouses to Quetico.
If it was the Granite River trip I would take my grand kids also.

I think Malberg is a neat lake....lot of day paddling options... That campsite on the west side across from the portage to the river............yep like it a lot.

I would probably enter at mudro, up through basswood and then border all the way to the grand portage. Have always wanted to do grand portage but at my age now would be best going down to the lake rather than up from the lake. Would go with my 2 best buddies with who we go often. Want to do some lake trout fishing while on that trip as well. Would also take some ashes from my best friend for one last trip.

Definitely a Quetico tour. Twenty days minimum. Solo, as all the folks I would care to spend this time with are physically unable to do a trip like this.

Cache Bay north through Kawnipi then west through Cutty and Camel to Delahey and the Death March Portages to Conmee. From there I would decide the route back depending on time and how I feel. At 66, the route to this point may have wrung me out, but maybe not. I've not been to Argo so I would like to go out that way and back to Saganaga along the border. Probably the most leisurely route to close the loop.

I am sure this trip could be done in less than 20 days, but I would like to rest up for a day before and after the big portages and also take my time through the areas I haven't traveled before. Four weeks would be nice, but I would start out triple portaging with all the food.

On second thought, I would go in for a whole summer. BWCAW, not Quetico as I could not afford it. Load up the old Prospector with two months of food and wander. Starting on the big border lakes and getting more adventurous as the outfit gets smaller. If this is indeed my last trip I would not want it to end.

Start at Gunflint and follow the border to Grand Portage. I'm familiar with the border lakes up the Gunflint and can't imagine a better way to end my tripping days?

Yeah, I agree. If I can only go one more time; I want to go all summer. Early
May through September. See as much as I can. Maybe do a food drop somewhere in the middle. Or perhaps arrange to have someone re-supply me. Maybe join me for some of my trip. Interesting question.

Anywhere inside the BW. I never grow tired of the area from east to west. Granted I haven't covered nearly the area some here have, but I haven't only experienced what Minnesota has to offer. Wilderness areas are shrinking all over north America and if your like me, I just want to enjoy it while it lasts. This year instead of reserving my trips in advance I'm going to take what's available and go with the wind. Retirement is good.

Seems like border lakes and longer trips are the general consensus. I have done neither. :( the longest I've been out there was 7 days, but dream constantly of at least a 2 week trip. An entire summer, that would be equivalent of winning the lottery? At least I have BWCA.com and YouTube to help curb my insatiable appetite for the Boundary Waters. From all the things I read on this site, more frequent and longer trips are generally enjoyed by those who have retired. Myself only being 44, I have a long way to go for that. So for now, I'll have to be content with my week long trips every other year. I'd go more often, but no one in my family enjoys the disconnected wilderness experience, nor does any of my work counterparts. That may be attributed to all of us being a bunch of tech heads and IT folk! I've always enjoyed the outdoors, my Dad made sure that was instilled in me from a very, very early age. Thanks to all of you for sharing, it's only 687 miles from home to the Boundary Waters, but most of the time it feels like a million!
