I’ve been going into Quetico via northern entry points for many years and have another trip planned for September. I’ve got an extra week of vacation in June, however, and I’ve often thought about pulling my boat up to the Atikokan area and spending some time fishing some of the local lakes or rivers out of the comfort of my own boat. Of course, I have to do everything as cheaply as possible so I would like to find someplace up there where I can set up a primitive base camp for a week with just a tent and a screen tent. Some of the private campgrounds run $30-$45 per night, which is more than I want to spend to sleep in a tent. Does anyone know of any ideas where in that general area I might be able to camp on the cheap? I’m not looking for a boat-in access area but rather a drive to spot because I’ll try to hit a few different bodies of water while I’m up there. One other obstacle I’ll have to get past is finding a place to charge my trolling motor batteries. Anyway, thanks for any ideas!

Contact Brown's Clearwater West Lodge. Talk to Barry and see what he has for camp sites. Lots of options in this area.

I am heading up there on a canoe loop in Mid Aug.

Send me an email if you want more info.

You can camp anywhere on Crown land for $10 per night.

I looked at their website, and they want $50 per night to camp, so I’m going to have to look elsewhere. Thanks for the suggestion though.

i stayed at a municipal campground in the town of Atikokan for about 12USD a night. Check out Bunnell Campground. . If you keep your set-up small, you could do the tent sites. It's a fairly open grassy campground next to a stream and waterfall. You pay at the curling club (don't mention that the US won the gold, they will charge you extra :)

Thanks, that might be as good as it gets outside of camping on crown land.
