Hi all,
I'm looking for a well-priced used solo canoe in Royalex or comparable material that is good for extended trips on both lakes and class I-II+ rivers. Ideally a used Wilderness, Voyageur, NorthWind, or similar. Been trying for a month now to find one. Missed an opportunity on CL.

Ideal specs: 15'5"-17' and 55# or less.

Oh, and recommendations on new materials that are comparable to Royalex are welcomed. Thanks again, Travis

An opportunity has come up to buy a 2012 Wenonah Wilderness for around $800. The seller does not know what material it is made of, but he knows it isn't fiberglass or kevlar. Any ideas on how I can find out?

It's an 8 hr round trip drive, so I need to be sure of the material before I'll consider driving that far.

Is it possible that the hull has a label on it that says "Tuf-weave"? That would indicate the canoe is fiberglass. Tuf-weave is Wenonah's proprietary fabric of 50% fiberglass and 50% polyester.

Just ask for the HIN. Then call wenonah with it and they should be able to tell you.

That's a good idea. I'm figuring it's gotta be RX or Tuf-Weave if it's not Kevlar. I'd get it in either case, but now I'm thinking 8 hrs R/T is too far, so I'm going to hold out a bit longer. Headed up to the twin cities May 12.

Well, don't know if you're interested, but I have a used 'glass Mad RIver Independence. I've owned Wenonah boats in tuffweave and Mad River's fiberglass is more robust. I have friends from the Des Moines area (both sides) coming down here in about a week so I could probably get it up there pretty easily? Here's a link to my add and some Indy reviews. Cowdoc here also has one.

Hi Terry,
Thanks for drawing your offer to my attention. It's tempting and I'm going to think about it for now. What I really want is a good condition royalex or, less desirably, T-Formex. But if I don't find one soon, I may take you up on it. Morel season is coming and I don't wanna be land bound.

Heheh, my Rock Star would be a good boat I love mine and won't be parting with it anytime soon. As for T-formex, it SEEMS like it MAY be even better than royalex? Just not enough boats made out of it or years of use to tell, though?

If you could get away for a few days, come join your neighbors down here next week!

Thanks for the invite, but I don't think I'll make it.

It does, however, seem like I found my 2008 Wilderness RX for $800. Headed to Peoria, IL next week to pick it up! If anybody has any recommendations of camping spots or large groves of dead elms between Des Moines and within an hour on any side of Peoria, let me know!
