nofish: "I've stayed at that site. Its a great site and I can't even imagine the wave action needed to do that given the lake is pretty far below the site."

Wow, amazing to see spray that reached way up atop that cliff, for sure. Sure to be (even more) bent-over birch next summer.
In 2005, our first year camping at Split Rock, I wanted the view from up on that cliff, site #17. All of those sites -- 17-20 ? -- are way up there and it got pretty tiresome hauling the cart up that hill. And, it always seemed 10-15 degrees colder to be exposed to that wind up there. We got smarter over the years and moved down to #13 (the absolute best), or #11 if 13 was taken. The past 4 years we have been content at #1. With age comes wisdom.
After 13 consecutive June trips there, we are moving up to base camp at CR Magney. Need to cover more of the eastern sections of the Superior Hiking Trail. But our heart will always be at Split Rock.

My first trip ever to Split Rock we booked the only site available...the very last site at the end of the cart path and then up a walking path at the top of a huge hill. That trip it was me, my wife, and our daughter who was just over a year old at the time. The amount of crap I had to haul into that site was ridiculous. Because we were stupid and seriously over packed for the 1 year old kid it took me 2 cart loads to get it all in there and then countless trips up the walking trail.
It turned out to be the worst camping trip of our lives. My daughter screamed most of the night and collectively we got maybe 2 hours of sleep. The wind kicked up over night and was blowing about 25-30 mph off the lake and then the rain that was supposed to hold off until afternoon rolled in about 8am and was set to down pour all day. When I saw that weather and checked the radar on my phone I pulled the plug on the trip and packed up. Two more cart loads of gear back to the car in the rain and I was spent. All of that work and aggravation and we weren't even there for 24 hours. The guy at the office was very nice though and refunded us the full price for the unused nights even though they were never going to fill that site in that weather and he also bought back our unused bundles of firewood.
