I've heard there is a third fall, but know people who have looked for it and didn't find it. No one ever talks about it. Is there one? We are going to be in the area this spring (if spring ever comes) and would like to see it if it is there.

Falls are spectacular. I don't know if there is third one. Fortunately i have visited falls twice so far. walked all the way to top. hiked the trail pasted the falls. I think there are two.

I’ve been to the falls on 3 different trips. I thought I went to the top and only found two sets of falls. I could have missed one on the bottom end because the trail does not follow the water. You can hear it but not always see it. If you go be sure to find this ancient Cedar tree. It is located at the bottom set of falls and then walk downstream to the tree. You can’t miss it if you are looking for it.

I agree with the previous posts. You'll know when you are at the top. It opens up into a marshy clearing that to me was nearly as beautiful as the falls itself. Anything below the two falls can't really be another waterfall. There is little elevation left as it heads into Pine. Its a must-see falls though!

I didn't think to soak in it, but Eric at Clearwater Lodge swears by the Johnson Falls soaking on his podcast review they recently did.

2 falls, and a swim/soak is a must.

Yep! Been there 5 times now. Swam in it 4 of the 5. One of my favorite places.

I’m heading there as well, but not until July, definitely looking forward to a good soaking. That Cedar looks amazing as well. I’ll definitely have to head downstream to find it. Thanks for the great pics and advice. I don’t want to hijack the thread, but does anybody have any other must see things in the area? I heard about a sunken boat (in only 7 or 8 feet of water)in the Royal river that you can paddle right over. Might go check that out as we’ll be putting in at EP 69.

Thanks,

Tony

There's a sunken boat just north of the Clearwater -> Mountain Lake portage as well. There's also the Spaulding mine and shack if you consider that "in the area". I do.

Can you tell me more about where the mine is? Going into Clearwater on 6/17 (if the ice is out!).

Only two falls. Definitely worth hiking all the way to the top past the falls. Swim in the falls for sure, we also went for a skinny dip up at the top when the water heads down into the falls. Nice swim up there too!

Crazy coincidence:
Doing research for our July trip, I came upon a site with this off-hand statement:
"Johnson Falls is made up of three waterfalls." Made me do a triple-take. (Pun intended) I thought about starting a post here, got distracted, and then moosewatcher beat me to it. Perhaps the good folks at Golden Eagle Lodge could provide us with the gps coordinates for the three locations.

Mike a member here called McSweeny has made a video of the mine building. Do a search and it should pop up.

The mine and shack are generally on the East end of Spaulding lake which is SE of Johnson Falls. It's not very far as the crow flies but if you're taking portages there are a few to get there including the Canoe to Pine lake portage which is a fun one.

I had the exact coordinates of the shack but unfortunately lost them when my last foretrex bit the dust. If you do some forum searching and look on the web you can find more info. I wish I had more detailed info to give you, but the search is really half the fun anyways. ;)

The portage from Clearwater into Mountain is bisected by the BRT. From that intersection, take a short 10 minute hike on the BRT to the west for a beautiful overlook over Mountain Lake.

You'll find an equally beautiful (subject to some debate) Mountain Lake overlook by heading east from that intersection on the BRT. It's just that you're not looking east down the full length of the lake from here.

Photos of both vantage points may be found (among other gorgeous shots) on this page of BRT overlook pics

But, can we loop back to the original question?

Where might this mythical third falls at Johnson Falls be located?
None of my topo maps would indicate such a spot.

I sent this question to Golden Eagle Lodge.
