Hello All,

Looking into purchasing a tent for my trip. I used a Kelty TN2 in the past. Unfortunately, a hole formed in the rain fly near the clear window area.

Currently looking at either an Alps Mountaineering Chaos 3, a Marmot Tungsten 3, or a Kelty TN3, as despite the hole, it was a good tent.

Anyone that has used any of the above please let me know what you think.

I have been very happy with my Tungsten 3, especially for the price. Plenty of room for two people and easy to set up. Good ventilation. Having 2 doors and vestibules makes sharing the tent a bit easier.

I have a Chaos 3 and here's my story. My boys were using it in 2012, we were on Horseshoe in late June when Duluth flooded, it rained 12 inches in 3 days. At one point the tent was so deep in water that the floor floated up 2 or 3 inches between them and around them. Not one drop of water in the tent.

I have the tungsten 3. Used it a fair amount the last 2 years and pretty happy with it. Plenty of room for 2, room for a dog if your pads aren't the extra long/wide. Nice and airy, which is great in summer, but in the shoulder seasons it can be a little cool at night, especially if it is windy (the breeze can blow under the fly and through the netting). It held up well in strong winds, even without using the tie downs. The netting offers a great view if you are camping where you don't need to use the fly!

Marmot also now has a Fortress 3p, which is the basically the same as the tungsten, but with solid walls instead of netting. So it does add some weight. We just bought it this year, and used it last weekend. As the temperature dropped 25 degrees Saturday afternoon, and it became very windy, we were glad we brought the fortress instead of the tungsten.

A second for the Tungsten 3, about as simple to setup as it gets, also comes with an ground cloth that anchors to the poles. Size is good for two, for three go up to the Tungsten 4, and why were at it am I the only one that thinks a two person tent should fit two, a three person tent should fit three, and a four person tent should fit four. Have you ever seen a bicycle built for two with only one person riding?

I like my Mountainsmith Equinox 4 tents for 2 people and clothing/gear. Usually priced well on Sierra Trading Post. I've been through some major wind and rain storms in them and surely have confidence in the shelter with its full coverage rain fly.

Chaos 3 is an awesome light weight tent. Used it last August for 8 nights in at crab lake entry and changing sites and lakes every night. 2 nights of rain and not a drop in tent. Spacious and breathable. Easy to set up. Alps mountaineering is a local company from my home state of Missouri. Great people and good company. They offer huge discounts to scouts to get kids into the outdoors.

If you haven't pulled the trigger another vote for the Chaos 3. I think SteepandCheap.com still has them for $140 can't go wrong especially at that price.
