Nice report, those windy days are not fun.

"No matter which direction we were heading, including the West to South turn on Jitterbug and the South to West turn on Ashub, the wind was directly in our faces at all times."

Uh huh. Why is that? I've had this happen on many a trip. A mystery of the universe I guess. I really enjoyed reading this. Are you a writer by any chance?
I went from Lake one through Insula, Thomas, Ima, etc. and out Snowbank so could relate very well. We always roll the dice when it comes to Snowbank. You made the right decision to wait out the wind.

It's nice that you have a friend like Dan to trip with. Thanks for the story.

I plan on heading to Thomas Lake this Memorial Day weekend. How busy was it last year?

Thanks for sharing! I’ve never seen a grill mat like that! It fit perfectly! You mentioned leaving at 2 in the morning, I’ve done that too and I think there’s lots that do from the Twin Cities area. Most trips now I leave late the evening before, after traffic dies down and dirtbag it in my truck at the EP after picking up my permit at Voyageur North (they’re open until 10). Works pretty smoothly, but like you said, might not work as I get older.
