I had a trip planned to the BWCA for my family and things just changed a bit. My wife has to have foot surgery on August 7th so we have to limit portages and we have a window of July 28 to August 5th. I looked and BWCA entry points are very limited. Quetico is not out of the question at all. My wife usually likes 4-5 day trips, but I can likely stretch to 6 or 7 days I think. I would prefer base camping if possible.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

An East Bearskin permit is available the 28th and portaging is very easy to Alder and minimal to a couple of lakes beyond.

What about Seagull or Sag? You could do the easy loop with Red Rock & Alpine. Longest portage would be from Seagull to Alpine unless you go thru Grandpa at some point.
Although, looks like both EPs are full for Saturday and Sunday.

You could also do something easy out of Moose or Snowbank.

I still see a lot of good entry points available for July 28 when I look. In addition to what was already mentioned.... Seagull and Sag are open now when I checked

Homer EP 40 gives you really short portages to Pipe or Vern. I was just there the weekend before Memorial Day on a solo and saw zero people.

Baker EP 39 has short portages until Weird.. my then 9yo and I saw a lot of moose between Peterson and Jack and had good walleye fishing on Jack a few years ago.

Kawishiwi EP 37, Sawbill EP 38, and Brule EP 40 give you no portage options or short portages to nearby lakes.

If Quetico is an option you could easily get to Sunday Lake or Burke Lake. Better yet you could either take the three easy portages to North Bay or even paddle from Prairie to North Bay via Basswood without any portages. North Bay has a number of campsites to choose from and even a few options just a portage or two from North Bay.

I second the suggestion for Brule (41)... a few nice medium portages up through the Cone lakes and you're on Winchell, which is my favorite lake in the Bee-Dub and has nice options for a few days of basecamp. There are a few different options out of Winchell which also have small and easy portages. Still permits available on the 28th and 29th of June.
