Wow! I used to enjoy going through a few (much smaller) rapids, liked the adrenaline rush and challenge. We knew our limits and abilities, and balanced our want of adventure with a real desire not to get hurt. But that video is insane. Just watching it scares me.

Ha! There's just so much chance involved in some of those runs. Did you see when a kayak's bow would hit a submerged rock and pop the boat and paddler in the air? Hit the rock and you might die. Not hit the rock and you might not die. Either way, you can't see it and you're moving too fast to react to it.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

That's what I don't understand about this type of activity. In most of the runs they had little power over the outcome. Its not much more than russian roulette with a kayak.

I've run two of these rapids in days past. On various rivers I have run into similar difficulties as seen in many of the clips.
There is a movement within the whitewater tribe to get to the harder stuff as fast as possible and some folks learn the hard way that sometimes you need to take time on the easier stuff to perfect your technique. That being said, some of these guys are going out on the edge I would never have touched.

If you're gonna be dumb, you've gotta be tough.

These people are BSC. At least many of them are wearing helmets, but it doesn't seem to protect their faces.
I definitely feel more comfortable running any kind of "rapids" in a kayak, but I'd say I'm going to go with class 2 for my comfort (in a kayak) and zero in a canoe.

Ps. reminds me of the Red Bull people trying to paddle Inga.

I interviewed a lifelong, paddling risk-taker once who's buried drowned friends and family and he told me it's chance who lives or dies, that some of the best he's known are buried and some of those with less skill are still breathing.

I'd be afraid just standing on the banks of the Inga.
