Has anyone done the EP16 (Moose portage river north) route lately? How is it? Any good campsite suggestions? I can’t find any new information about EP16.

Dad and I went in there last June. Hopped over and out Mudro via LLC, Iron and Crooked. Near the entry, site 1803 on Agnes, mid-lake was a gem for us.

My wife and I just came out through Agnes -> Nina Moose River/Lake -> Moose River last week. Water levels were good after all the previous weekends rains, but also were the portages with mud. This is a nice trip which gives you good views of rapids/falls at the portages and a mix of river and lake paddling. The Moose River is narrow with lots of turns while the Nina Moose is much more open and often a great place to spot wildlife.

Personally I don't recommend camping on Nina Moose as it gets heavy use and campsites are often in tough shape. Agnes has 17 designated campsites and most of which are great sites. If you want to go further up to Lac La Croix/Boulder Bay it gets even better.

We used all of the information on the interactive map for gps coordinates and all were spot on. This is a popular entry point and does get heavy use. We camped at 1793 on west side of Agnes, great site.

We had a great time, there never seems to be a bad day in the BWCA. I will have a trip report up hopefully this weekend with more pictures and details. Hope you get up there soon and enjoy your trip!

I camped on Agnes last September on 1805 the NE site near the longer portage to boulder river. We liked the site, however if the wind is coming out of the west it can be bothersome. There was also a bear on Agnes last year that stole a few food bags and woke me up one night rummaging through our camp (didn’t get our food). The website paddle plannr has the campsites that are “points” on the north side of the lake at 4-5 star ratings. They were all taken when we got to Agnes.

Nina moose lake is busy and the sites show it as said earlier, however site 1817 (east central site) was good. Very buggy but a good site. Site 1791 (western site closest to the portage) isn’t to bad but tent pads are limited.

Paddle and portage wise, EP 16 is easy. Easy portages that can get muddy but not bad. The only difficult part to paddle is Agnes itself. If it is windy (at all) the chop gets pretty bad, also the east side of the lake a a large bay. Where the mouth of the bay and the lake meet it gets nasty. I did it last year and my trip in June we used EP 16 as an exit.

In my opinion the ratings on paddle planne are so, so. We stayed on a “last resort” site on iron lake this year and we made it work. It was literally our last resort because the first 7 sites we went to were occupied. It had its issues. Very limited tent pads, in our case poor hammock trees, but the fishing was good and it was peaceful. You can make a 2-3 Star site be comfortable and fun.

One of the nicest campsites on Agnes is the second one on the left as you enter the lake from the south. It sits up on a high outcrop that looks out over the lake and receives plenty of cooling breezes.
