I was kayaking with a paddling group yesterday morning on the Mad River in Ohio. I talked to a nice couple paddling 2 solo Northstar canoes with a dog aboard. Just curious if either was a member of this forum. I wanted to talk longer but my group was ready to move on. The man said he had 7 trips to the BWCA.

What section did you paddle? Where did you put in? The Ohio state record smallmouth came out of the Mad and held up for a long time......now there are monster smallies in Lake Erie which might some day break the national record.

We put in on Lippincot road and went down to State Route 55. (about 10 miles). Our start time was earlier than Birchbarks first convoy of trippers. They had what seemed like 150 canoes and 50 kayaks ready for people at the same put-in! If I was by myself, there would definitey be a fishing pole with me.

That wouldn't have been me.....I would have to change my name to BWCAWMIKE......doesn't have the same ring to it......haha. I used to fish the Mad down by Triangle Park before it flowed into the Great Miami down in Dayton. No real big ones, but the numbers were good.

I live about a half hour east of where you put in. I heard there are some small trout in the upper part of Mad, never fished it before though.

Nice! It's been many years since I ventured that far North on the Mad to fish....I have never floated that section.....have always wanted to. I've floated/fished the lower portion many times as it's not 10 minutes from my house. As QM said, much better smallie water. You generally don't find trout below Springfield...waters too warm at that point. Primarily Rainbows, still a few holdover Browns, but I don't beleive they stock them anymore. Is there an actual canoe launch at Lippincott or just bridge access?

Mike "
Lippincot has a homemade "staircase" down to the river. Birchbark Canoe Livery uses this site profusely. I would suggest getting on the river before 9:00am, when Birchbark starts their excursions.

Hi local guys!

I live about 5 miles or less from that birchbark canoe place. I fly over the river a lot looking at the people on the water. If an ultralight plane that looks like a lawn chair with wings goes over you,,, its me!

Saw one of those fly over the Great Miami River earlier this week. There's also a guy named Sean Tucker who practices his stunt flying out at the local airstrip preparing for air shows this week.

I drove over and looked at the lippincott entry today. Is that private land? A lot of signs for towing vehicles and no parking ect. Can they stop you from parking a trailer and car there?

It looks like you may have about 200 feet on the south side, and much more on the north side. I only seen the no parking signs on the south side.
We are planning (weather permitting) to use it again tomorrow. If it is different, I will let you know.

Parking is fine on the north side of the road. I would avoid the south side completely to let Birchbark do their thing.

So Birchbark is putting up the signs saying no one is allowed to park there?

It shows as an public access point for the river on both sides. Birchbark has no right to control that entry. Here is mad river entry point map.

I don't know who put up the no parking signs on the south side of the road. Just as a common courtesy I would not park on the south side to allow both private and Birchbark to unload canoes. The Birchbark employees were very courteous and friendly both weekends.

Both Birchbark and private people use the south side of the road to unload canoe/kayaks. I don't know who put up the no parking signs on the south side of the road but i would not park there just as a common courtesy for the unloaders. Birchbark employees were very courteous and friendly both weekends.

I agree with the courteousy route normally,,but it gets under my skin when someone puts up a sign saying they will tow my vehicle for parking on public land just to make it convenient for themselves. If the sign said “unloading only” or something to that effect, i would agree with the sign.

I am going to check with the state of ohio on this spot. If the signs are not authorized by ohio,,,,,lol,,,i am gonna make trouble!

I was on a road trip w/Scouts last week and to my delight on our last night I realized that the "Scout Camping Area" at Wright-Patterson AFB is right on the Mad. On the other side of some trees and a razor wire fence, mind you. Water looked low the couple times I could see it from around Dayton.
