For less than $30 I picked up a food dehydrator. I've had the best luck drying bananas and apples. I haven't been successful yet but my father-in-law has made fruit roll-ups by drying apple sauce on wax paper.
I also have a little-chief smoker and have made venison jerky for years. When you are paddling and suddenly realize you are starving and camp is a good hour away a few sticks of venison jerky and a handful of dried banana chips are wonderful. They are also very light weigh.
I also use a dehydrator for camping fare. On my trip next week (church youth trip going in Moose River on Monday) I have dehydrated hamburger for meat sauce over spaghetti, as well as for in Hamburger helper meals for quick easy to make meals pretty cheap. Dehydrated tomato sauce/leather for the spaghetti, dehydrated apples and banana chips for snacking, Teriyaki Beef Jerky made from sirloin and teriyaki sauce dried in the dehydrator.
I am doing 7 days, 6 nights of meals for the group at about $20.00 per person for the entire 7 days. After last years menu, that the outfitter did that was mostly freeze dried meals, I told the church I would do the food. The group would enjoy the meals more and I would save the kids $30-50 a person. Last year for a 6 day 5 night trip it cost each camper $300. This year we have an extra day and it will cost each camper $230. By changing outfitters and doing our own food it saves them $70. a piece. I have a whole lot of happy kids and parents.
