Burt Reynolds died today. Next to my grandmother he was a major influence toward my interest in canoeing.

Yeah for some strange reason that I never quite understood, Deliverance sparked a surge in people's interest in canoeing. That whole canoe trip was a disaster from beginning to end, but people loved it.
I set a goal of losing 10 lbs. this year. I only have 15 left to lose.

RIP "Lewis." Loved the movie for the paddling and the scenery, but the dark, macabre tone of the book and the movie was disturbing to me and a billion others, I'm certain. My wife won't even watch it.
I Enjoyed Burt Reynolds most in "White Lightening" and "Gator," also from the early to mid '70's. I also thought he did an admirable job in Linda Bloodwrth-Thomasson's "Evening Shade?" RIP to a man whom my friends and I would have given our right. uhh, 'er...., shall we say "Appendage" to be!

In the book, you see the guys years after their trip and the Burt Reynolds character is forever reduced by what he endured. The swagger is gone.
I backpacked through the area and stayed at an inn that housed Burt Reynolds and a couple others. The innkeeper said they were great guys, kind and polite.

I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

I watch the movie every year or so; it has some memorable one liners.
Two I remember well are, "Why yall wanna mess with that river"? and "Are you lost city boy"! Have actually used both of them on a number of occasions to aggravate paddling buddies.
The book's author, James Dickey, was somewhat "unique".
I wrote him to get his signature to put in my Deliverance first edition book.
He sent me his signature alright; on an 8x10 photo of him. It's framed & hanging near one of my paddle racks. I also have an original, framed, Deliverance movie poster.

P.S. Payson Kennedy, long time director of Nantahala Outdoor Center in Bryson City, N.C. worked as a stunt man in Deliverance. Have a nice photo of him, and one of NOC's instructors with myself and 3 friends who were at NOC, attending a refresher course as Swiftwater Rescue Instructors. Kennedy was very friendly & outgoing, and listened intently to in our feedback about the course. He was very gracious to us; we spent the best part of an hour together.

Weird, I love movies but have never watched it. Probably came out during my halcyon days when I spent almost every night at a pool hall shooting for a couple of bucks or a beer.
I always liked Burt Reynolds. Seemed like a genuine sort of nice guy. Never heard anybody talk negatively about him. In Jupiter he contributed to the city with his Theatre which hosted many live performances (it is now the Maltz Jupiter theatre).
I suppose I will have to watch what is obviously a cult classic.

OneMatch: "One of my favorite's of his is "W.W. And The Dixie Dancekings". Can't find it anywhere now. But if you run across it, it's definitely a Burt Reynolds dark horse.

Heheheh, I think about that old man every time I see the Vols, or Payton Manning, or THAT color of orange for that matter (LOL)!

Well I got around to watching the cult classic. I have seen it before, or at least parts of it. Some interesting moral dilemmas but overall I found the flick a bit of a bore. I really didn't like how the mountain folks were portrayed. I do concede that some stereotypes have their origins in truth...........but my Dads folks were from the Appalachian deep south. True Hillbilly's from the mountains of Kentucky. I spent my summer vacations from school growing up amongst them. No running water, outhouses, kerosene lamps and coal fired stoves up in the "holler". They were as fine of people as you ever wanted to meet. Clean, tidy and upright and so were their neighbors. Certainly not the inbred ignorant and vicious people depicted in the film.
The movie with Meryl Streep who played a rafting guide and Kevin Bacon who played a ruthless bank robber was far better. Check it out if you get a chance.
