I've stayed in those cabins twice, both times in a very cold February. They're drafty (you can see a bit of daylight in between the logs). But it's a neat experience. They're not close to Lake Superior, but there's hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing opportunities. Like the article states the heaters keep the temperature around 50 degrees inside, so you need to keep the fire going to stay warm. I'd do it again

I've hiked back in there, never stayed. Nice little spot on MicMac lake which you have to walk in to. There are something like 4 cabins back there in a group, so it's not secluded like you were camping on a lake you had to yourself. Still, I always thought it would be a fun outing, especially in the winter.

Had a friend who got some nice northern pike out of one lake and there is a couple of trout lakes also. Yes it would be great snowshoe etc.

My wife and I have stayed there a couple times in very early February, both times snowshoeing in, and are going again this coming February. They are really great, with wood stoves supplemented with gas heaters. We never got cold and the snowshoeing trails are spectacular. The north woods are a different world in the heart of winter. I strongly recommend this trip, but reservations are hard to come by even in the winter.
Just put one foot in front of the other; eventually you'll get there.

The cabins are great. I highly recommend. Some great snowshoeing and skiing right out the door.
The hill leaving the parking lot is steep, in both directions. I have skied it with my pulk, but not sure I would ski again.
The trail has access to the State Park ski trails to the Silver Bay ski trails, I think its called the Connector trail? But its a great ski trail, it feels almost like being out west!
Wood is supplied in huge piles by the Park, but in my experience its always been slightly green or wet. I would bring in an maul, I think they leave one but if you have one you like, its probably better.
Its also nice having a warm shower house available! Its only missing a sauna!

Here's my friend's report. She always has an amazing time there and makes me want to try it out too!
