I look forward to that day. Like you, I've taken breaks.
"Please, don't believe everything you think," made me laugh. I used to teach a college class and I'd warn my students to neither trust nor dismiss their feelings.
"They're just additional data," I'd say.

Hard to take a break when you have made so many good friends and such here. Our politics have people drawing lines in the sand in so many aspects. We used to be able to get along so well... respected each other’s beliefs and whatever. I find myself turning less and less to the forums here myself. So thanks bwca.com for the good friends I’ve made. I’m not going away 100%, I’m less inclined to come here when canoeing is rarely the theme. I hope sedges the best as of everyone here. It’s going to be a long winter if we’re going to be bashing political, religious and whatever views. I miss the innie outy arguements. The hang or sleep on the ground... But, political and such outside their respected forums get more than sedges blood boiling it looks like.
Let’s not make this a long colder then it is anyway winter...

It might be useful to simply skip the listening point thread when logging on. It always seems to me that this thread is most often the origin of conflict. And often the least useful of the various threads if you are only interested in canoeing. I find trip planning, gear, Quetico, and solo the most interesting and useful as well as the least controversial.

I had thought that some of the most rancorous subjects of the spring and early summer had finally died ignoble deaths here. It seemed that many of the topics of late have been much less volatile. I admit to coming here less often since my return from the BW this summer. Have I missed a particularly heated thread somewhere?
Could it be that it is not this particular forum, but your newsfeed that is getting more heated as we approach the election? I know that I am also avoiding my newsfeed app as we get closer. :) I am a much happier person for it.

My experience is that some people can ignore arguments and continue to read the rest of a forum but others wind up being put off and can't compartmentalize things. That's just something to be aware of as part of a community like this. I spend a lot of my time on a lymphoma forum (where I'm a moderator) and we keep things very calm because people really need the resource as they fight their disease.
Sedges, I hope your break doesn't need to be too long.

rtallent: "Yep, bring back the apple vs watermelon green skittles debate! Now, there was a battle!"
Actually the best green skittle was the lime, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise! ;-) I stopped buying regular flavor skittles when they replaced the lime with green apple.

I have many faults, some oddly, I know I have, but in a way I’m glad I have them. Too much pride, too emotional, and too honest. These three can kill you. In more ways than one. I’m sure being self righteous isn’t one of them. As far as I can tell. Good luck with that. I just think I’m cooler than everyone else.

Hang in there Ben your level headed well informed comments and knowledge about canoeing I enjoy very much.
I too like many sometimes get tired about certain people trying to influence my believes and if different than yours you are a evil person.
I pick and choose the forums and topics lately for like many I come to this forum to enjoy many many friends comments and to learn so much.
Why this came up now I have no idea b ecause I have ignored certain topics and forums. Great forum board, grat monitors overall. I do know a previous BWCA board which was very good got destroyed by certain comments made and many quit like myself and many others.
This board is very valuable to many, many newcomers getting there paddle wet for the first time and many others sharing advice and past and present dreams.
Yes,I loved the INNY-Outie argument so much fun and I actually learned from that being a Outie myself.
Yes Ben,not having a snow plow I started my snowblower and looking forward to winter. Bring it On.

i respect your decision, but you have not been here long enough.
the older i have become, it's easy to pass on all the babble.
self righteous, don't really see too much of that in print, just a bunch of good folk passing on information.
for me, it's a good coffee morning read time.
i did enjoy your trip report, be at peace brother!

Agreed. It is what it is and always will be. Just let it roll and move on to another thread.

I'm still a little confused by posts like this one. Maybe I'm a member of rowdier forums, but very little I see here is anywhere near as vitriolic as other forums or media I see. (I don't look at the politics thread here, so I might be missing the good stuff. :)
That certainly doesn't mean the OP is wrong to take a break, or that I'm right in my analysis, but whatever he/she chooses, I wish all the best...and you should stick around, as this is a good place indeed.

I like this site because it is a respite from "other forums and media" where it's relentless noise. It's friendly, old fashioned, and collegial - usually and in the past. But I guess people assume they have the right to come here and spew their beliefs, just like war protestors at a the funeral of a soldier killed in action.

Yes it sure is. On a 1-10 scale for unruliness, BWCA.com is about a 1. Twitter is a 10.
Without MT, it's a 0! (Just pulling your chain, MT.) :)

Give me a break... I was rude to no one. And I dont usually initiate controversial subjects, but rather push back on what others feel is fine to inject and do so in a generally polite manner, but without apology. I state my positions with conviction... that makes me a "bad person"? Or do I have to be "politically correct" and make certain that I offend no one and accept all "truths"?
Even now I am accused of "self righteous babble" for defending my belief in God (from those who felt at ease to slander those who believe) and for having the nerve to assert that flooding America with "recreational" drugs is an extremely poor idea..........and I did so with numerous scientific studies, reasonable discourse and, although humbling and shamefully, rather extensive personal experience which I am certainly not proud of.

I would imagine that Facebook/Twitter are worse, but thankfully I was too old to be an early adopter and now that the shadiness has been exposed I have no desire to find out.

Hah! .... this link goes to Cookie Monster singing Cookie Starts with C. Which is *awesome*, but I'm not sure how it goes to the lime (best) vs green apple (worst ever) skittle argument.
I did try to search youtube for commentary on green skittles, but everything I could find supported the "green apple is an abomination" side of the argument.
I've never tried the watermelon, but I don't like artificially watermelon flavored stuff, so I probably wouldn't like it. I have no problem with green apple specifically or on its own as an individual skittle, but its presence ruined the original skittles for me. Lime was great and it went well with every other flavor as a combo. Green apple, on the other hand, contrasts with almost all the other flavors as a combo, and not in a good way, at least on my taste buds.
But in lighter topics... how about that (political hot button issue that I support and you oppose)?

I suppose that could be considered a sophisticated and mature way to proceed and likely more profitable in the long run in many instances. But, unfortunately, it has never been my style and I can tend to be opinionated and outspoken to a fault at times.
The Book of Proverbs has much good advice about speaking.............. and knowing when to refrain from speaking. Perhaps I need to read that book once again ;-)

We can agree on that!
And you are most often the one to interject the controversy."
Who is "we" Bill? You speak for more than just yourself? Perhaps you could edit that and insert "I"...........then we, you and I, could be in agreement about a subject ( a first, imagine that!)
And why is it "controversial" to state an opinion which may differ from someone else? I am for open and honest discourse. I am for tolerance and diversity of thought. It is, after all, a forum is it not? Where the exchange of information and perspectives should be able to flow freely and with civility. If I have been rude and uncivil (excluding the politics forum of course ;-) then by all means enlighten me and I will offer a prompt apology.
Indeed, I have been accused of being "opinionated" which is fair enough..........But I prefer to ascribe my perspectives as "strong convictions." A subtle but distinct difference.

C'mon, Sedges, don't throw out the baby with the bathwater! There is so much on this board that is "Good" and so much to be learned, and so many folks with good hearts. Do my opinions mesh with all of them? NOPE, but I love this place anyway and just skip the threads that raise MY blood pressure. As the author of my favorite quotes and quips, Mark Twain, said:
“We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is in it and stop there lest we be like the cat that sits down on a hot stove lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove lid again and that is well but also she will never sit down on a cold one anymore.”

Well.....hows about a couple pertaining to the thread I suspect Sedges was upset about? I LOVE Twain and look for excuses to quote him!

Twain had several great quotes. I just wish they were always in their full entirety. Like the famous Watermelon and angels quote. It's always presented with just the last small portion of it. "When one has tasted watermelon, he knows what the angels eat."
In it's full entirety....
"Fruity Skittles are simply a travesty and a high crime against candy coating in general, peanut m&m's in particular. Although, I do thoroughly enjoy watermelon. When one has tasted watermelon, he knows what the angels eat." - Mark Twain

Peanut Butter M&Ms for me. To keep it related to the BWCA, this is my go-to indulgent snack for outdoor trips. Or plain. They're all good. I have yet to eat an M&M I didn't like. I do prefer the almonds to the peanuts.

They are a babe in the candy market-so young.
Skittles were first made commercially in 1974 by a British company. They were then introduced in North America in 1979 as an import confectionery. Finally in 1982, domestic production of Skittles began in the United States.

Tend to agree with the disappointment of the ill informed, self pontificating and just flat imaginative posters giving authoritative advice and opinions about anything and everything. This doesn't mention the Dear Abby posts about personal issues that have nothing to do with anything related to canoe tripping. Who cares? Still here occasionally.
