Hard-n-Crunchy or the Soft-n-Chewy kind?

I'm partial to the original Nature Valley kind myself.

Which is that? I'm a soft and chewy man myself. Why work more than i have to when i'm puting all my energy toward paddling and fishing?

I have usually taken both for variety. I tend to like the cruncy ones though because they aren't as sweet and sugary and sticky.

Cliff lists Hudson Bay Bread as (4 teenagers, 10 day supply):
Cream 3c soft margarine or butter with
4c white sugar
1/3c light Karo corn syrup
2/3c honey
2t. maple flavour (Mapleine)

Gradually add 1 1/2c sliced almonds and 1c. (or 2, or 3) chocolate chips. If you're into coconut or raisins, now's the time to add them
Mix in 19 (!) c. rolled oats (no instant).

Press into greased cake pan, 1/4-1/2" thick. 325 for 20 minutes, golden brown. Push down with a spatula before you try to cut 'em out.

If you're insane, check out the official Igor Bars page:

My family's preferred poison is Backpacker's Super Bars:
1/2c butter
1/3c br sugar
1/2c oats
1/2c ww flour
1/2c white flour
1/4c wheat germ
2tsp grated orange rind
2egg
1c nuts
1/4c raisins
1/4c coconut
1/2c chocolate chips

cream butter and br sugar
blend oats, flours, wheat germ, orange rind
pat into ungreased 8x8 pan
mix remaining
pour over base
350 degrees 30 minutes

I do love the Nature Valley trail mix ones. Otherwise i'm a crunchy guy myself, unless it is chewy covered in chocolate. Good stuff.

Nature Valley Hard and Crunchy. I prefer the nutrition profile of these over the soft and chewy kind.

However, I sometimes opt for the Clif bars, which are more on the soft and chewy side, so go figure.

Clif bars are good if I need real staying power instead of a snack. Too pricy to use as my mainstay, though.

jniehof,
I tried to make your bars and they turned out to be more like a cake. Did I do something wrong? I expected them to be more like Hudson Bay Bread than, say, carrot cake. They are good though.

I'm not too picky either...I definitely like both kinds. I agree about the Clif bars also...they're great but a little too pricey for me.

My wife makes the best granola bars I have ever had. They are soft and chewy of course. The recipe was found on www.allrecipes.com. I absolutely love them.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Playgroup-Granola-Bars/Detail.aspx

INGREDIENTS

* 2 cups rolled oats
* 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
* 1/2 cup wheat germ
* 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 1 cup all-purpose flour
* 3/4 cup raisins (optional)
* 3/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 cup honey
* 1 egg, beaten
* 1/2 cup vegetable oil
* 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Generously grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
2. In a large bowl, mix together the oats, brown sugar, wheat germ, cinnamon, flour, raisins and salt. Make a well in the center, and pour in the honey, egg, oil and vanilla. Mix well using your hands. Pat the mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
3. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven, until the bars begin to turn golden at the edges. Cool for 5 minutes, then cut into bars while still warm. Do not allow the bars to cool completely before cutting, or they will be to hard to cut.

Thanks for the granola / Hudson Bay Bread recipes, we look forward to trying them.
This is a granola recipe that we enjoy ,gotten from another paddling site. Avoids some processed sugar, yet taste terrific.

Peanut butter granola bars
2 cups med. cooking rolled oats
1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/4 cup liquid honey
1/2 cup natural crunchy peanut butter (we add more,
personal preference)
1/4 cup canola oil
1/2 cup dry cranberries (can substitute raisins, apricots
or dates etc.)
1 teaspoon pure villa extract
1 beaten egg
Large pinch of cinnamon
Large pinch of salt

Preheat oven to 325 F. Completely line a 9 X 9 X 2 baking pan with foil. Grease the foil. Set aside. Mix together rolled oats, whole wheat flour, cranberries (or your choice of dried fruit), cinnamon and salt. Set aside. In another bowl, combine egg, honey,peanut butter, canola oil, vanilla extract and mix well. Fold the liquid mixture into the rolled oats mixture and mix just enough to combine all ingredients. Press the preparation in the pan (we use a spatula). Cook for 30 to 35 minutes or until lightly brown. Let cool, remove from pan and cut into bars.
They keep for weeks and we have had great success freezing them.
Enjoy,
Boppa
