Now there's a tough question kuks24. I go most every year in September and the bite seems to depend on weather and water temps.
I have seen great fishing and non-existant fishing. The earlier in the month seems better more consistantly than mid-late September. I think as the water temps cool, the fish get slow and the bite does to. As you approach October you may see the lakes turnover which also slows the bite.
I still use my usual tackle for bass and walleye. Jigs (many colors)with twister tails and plastic. Shad Raps in crawfish color and some spoons for northerns. The Lake Trout may be shallow if the lakes have turned over and or cooled down so you can try for them if you go to a laker lake.
Fish the shallows and about 25-30 feet out from shore. Parallel the shore and troll until you find a hot spot. Usual structure (rock piles, points etc) are also worth exploring.
One word of caution-check the regs when you go to make sure you are fishing legally. If you go early September you should be OK.
One point to make-I go fishing, but do not classify myself as a good fisherman. I usually feel fortunate to catch fish and know if I worked harder and practiced I would be better. Take this information as non-expert advice.
Good luck and tell us how you did when you return.

I to take many trips into Quetico in early September. My experience has been pretty consistent, yielding a lot of Smallmouth along the shorelines and on structure, and Lakers trolling in the deeper waters. My key has been to find the open water reefs.
> What shallow water (25-30 foot) trolling methods do you use?
> Any experience on William, Conmee, Brent, Darky or Argo?
> What techniques do you use when trolling for Lakers? I use dispy divers (sometimes dodgers) and spoons.
> Any special techniques with the Walleye? We get lucky every couple of years, but not the consistency we'd like.
The count down is on. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

We fish Sawbill, Alton, Beth, etc. We always go the weekend after Labor Day. We go out in the middle, find a weed patch and just use slip bobbers and leeches. We slaughter the walleyes every year, give it a shot

This year went to Alpine, Red Rock and Rog. None of the devices I used on last year's trip to Cummings worked. I landed one reasonably sized Smallie. We tried everything except live bait. Just to cover our bases, live bait will make the trip with us next year.

I have fished some on Alpine with little success. I didn't find that lake to be very productive. Perhaps because the lake is within one portage and has a lot of traffic is the cause.
I have gone a bit deeper in, to Ogish, with better success. Then again, I have never gone in the September time frame.
Wishin I was fishin!
