Proud first time dog owner here.
Rescued this 1-1/2 year old pittie mix at the end of March this year. Been working on "in", "out" of the canoe in the backyard the last few weeks. Saturday we got on the water for the first time. Did a quick 15 minute paddle close to shore, then let her get out and play in the water. Then got back in and another 45 minute paddle around a small lake.
Shes a natural!
Next test will be catching a fish with her in the canoe....baby steps :)

That one is a Nova Craft Fox in Fiberglass.
Got her back in it this weekend for another longer run. Great in the canoe, but turns out shes scared of fishing poles, go figure. More specifically the bzzzzz noise made when casting. I worked with her once we got home to convince her its not going to hurt her, and shes warming up to it.

We have had rescues the last 25 years, we also have fostered many pups. It is hard to know what they went through before they arrive at our homes. Some of the dogs past could be why it is afraid of fishing poles or the noise. I hope it gets better for you two.
May the rivers be crooked and winding, and your portages lonesome, leading to the most amazing view.
