I am leading a group of 4 for a May 20 to 23 trip to Sag. I have never fished the lake before and I am intimidated by big water when it comes to fishing. I will be using my small boat and motor and camping on the lake.

Because this spring has been so cold, I think my best bet will be to target lake trout instead of walleyes. I have never targeted lake trout before.

What areas of Sag should I start focusing on for the lakers? Any idea what depth, what lures, what method?

I appreciate any advise!

Should be pretty straight forward for lakers. Especially with a motor. As you probably know the lake trout will be higher up in the water column so any spoon or shallow diving trolling bait will work perfectly. I have found that they relate to steep shorelines and shallow-ish structure. Anything from 10-50 feet should produce fish. Troll around until you find them. Make sure you you all have different lures on to find out what works best. I repeat, troll around until you find them. Troll islands, underwater saddles, humps etc. Keep moving to find active fish.

Hope this info helps. Anyone else feel free to correct me as this is just my opinion.

Deepwater is right on with the trolling. Plus you're likely to run into other species while trolling as well. Rapala Husky Jerks, Bomber Long A's, Thundersticks, etc. will all do well. If you want to get a little deeper, then Shad Raps, deep Thunderstick Jr's, etc. will do the trick.

If you have electronics, find some high percentage spots like shallow flats with a steep dropoff to deep water, any kind of ravine/trench, and humps. If you see baitfish on sonar, even if you don't see lakers underneath (or even within) them, it could be a good spot to drop down a jig with white curly tail grub and drag/hop along bottom. Caught 2 nice lakers this way back in 2019, just in an area we saw a cloud of bait but no bigger fish on sonar. Jigging and casting is way more fun for lakers but you can't deny the effectiveness of trolling. If you get hit in a spot multiple times, that's also a sign to drop down a jig and see if you can't pick one up.
