What type of night and day temps are typical/non-typical for a trip in mid june?

What kind of bugs can I expect for this time of year?

Any other surprises I should know about?

Last year I went in the last week of June, and the bugs were not bad... there were a couple of days when there were plenty of friendly flies around, but not the biting kind. Mosquitoes were not too bad either, of course we had a lot of rain and cooler temperature that week. Woke up one morning to 39 degrees and wind and rain... Just take some good bug repellant and you will be fine. Some suggestions for repellant include "Bite Blocker" keeps flies, gnats etc... away and ultrathon keep everything else... although they both do a good job on them all... Bite blocker did keep friendly flies off very well... for example just to test one day... I put bite blocker on one leg and not the other... 27 friendly flies on the untreated leg... none on the other... Of course if you do not like repellants, just wear long pants and long sleeve shirt...

Great information, I had never heard of Bite Blocker. I have a 20 degree bag so I am not worried about the temp at night. I was curious about day temps.

How about the water temp? I don't want to bring heavy boots to portage.

I hear the flies are bad in mid June, I hear about everything different answer from everyone. I guess it depends on mother nature.

Hi Bruce,

Where did you get that bite-blocker at?

I have heard that putting lemon scented dawn dish soap on your ankles keeps the biting flies away for a while. Has anyone tried this?

I originally found it on line while looking for some good repellant... but Then while looking at a hardware store here at home I found they sell it. And I use it all the time... keeps gnats away from your face while turkey hunting and it is all natural... Do I need to buy some and bring it to Ely when I come up... ha ha

Hey Adam, if you want me too, I will send you a bottle if I can get your snailmail address. Just e-mail me with it and I will ship it to you if the store still has it. I have not checked this year, but I will.

Typical June temps have lows in the 30-40's and often in the 50's. I think most nights will be upper 40's to low 50's. Daytime temps everything from 40's and 50's to 80's. Again most days will be upper 60's to low 70's.

Depending on the weather and moisture the area has had you could be hitting the worst of the bugs. Typically the worst bugs are early to mid June with the Black Flies dependant on the rain and temps.

June can have days of wind and rain as the summer season approaches. I do not travel often in June as I prefer May and Late July and beyond. I don't mind the bugs-but I have better luck with then later in the year. I also am hunting for ladyslippers over near bemidji in June so I have other activities I am doing.

Good Luck and just be prepared for just about anything. But then you need to do that no matter when you go.

Thanks for the great information Bog. I didn't realize the bugs may be that bad that time of year. I have been up in August and the bugs where not bad at all.

I will have to try different times of the year to find the best trip for me.

That was exactly the information I was looking for.

Good fishing!

Mid-July through August the bugs are not too bad. The most I encounter is a few deer flies and mosquitos at dusk until it cools down.

I have to add that I have been to the BW in June and been pleasantly surprised by the few amount of bugs-some of my excitement was relative to what I was expecting. I am sure the bugs were worse then they would be in August, but I was expecting swarms and they never happened. Bugs don't "Bug me" too much so I could only go in June I would not let them stop me. If I could only go once in a year and I had options-I would go later or earlier than June. My opinion. Of course my favorite time to go is May or September when the chances of bugs are very low, but so are the night time temps.
