I’m looking for any input/suggestions for a trip out of ep30 into lakes one, two, and three. I’ve never been to this area before but have done the Kawishiwi triangle many years ago, I think that’s in this general area. I am assuming this is a popular area from the number of campsites shown on the map. It looks like an easy portaging route which would be important as we will have a 75 year old, in good shape though, with us. Is the fishing ok etc. or any other info that may be of interest, we will be out for 5-6 days. I’m looking at a McKenzie map and although not on our route exactly, but near, there are 3 spots that say dangerous waters, anyone know what that means? Also wondering about how this area is doing with respect to the latest fires. Thanks.

EP #30 is indeed the busiest of paddling entry points in the bwca. Also, the 2 portages from Lake One into Lake Two are as easy as they come.

I can't speak to exactly which spots your map is referencing but, I suspect they are referring to various rapids in those areas. Generally speaking they are not necessarily something to be overly concerned about but, it is good to know if you do intend to paddle that way especially in times of high water. As a general rule, the best person to talk to about this is the one who issues you your permit as they will undoubtedly have the most up to date info about the area & potential hazards.

I have several trips in the area and at 76 it is still on the list of very do-able. My last trip in the area was three years ago so I won't comment on current conditions. There is a rock garden in the area approaching the Lake One to Lake Two portage and water levels do make a difference. The dangerous water areas are not along usual travel routes. I have gone shoulder season to avoid the crowds, but it is a busy area. I use the trip reports and map feature on this site to collect useful information in planning my trips. Enjoy.
