The course of the $17 million project will likely be set in a month, Mayfield said, and would begin in 2025.

I have always thought it quite interesting how the entirety of Highway 35 ends and the gateway to the North Shore starts along a semi-residential road like London. I suppose they want to remove the dying ash trees and smooth out the traffic jams that occur. Superior St will be the likely detour which shouldn't be much of an issue.

That all being said, in an ideal vision of Duluth, 35 would run up on top of the hill and allow the lakefront property to remain as wilderness or community areas. Although, the amount of money they just spent to redo the spaghetti interchange means that will not happen for the next handful of decades at least.

I lived within a mile of that intersection when they built it back in the late 80's or early 90's. If I recall prior to that it ended where Mesaba Ave. goes up the hill. It would either dump you on to Superior Street or Mesaba Ave. They tried to keep highway traffic out of downtown because of the traffic lights and pedestrians.

I’m sure they won’t make everyone happy, but hope some improvements are made. I only lived in Duluth for 1.5 years but in general I remember frequently being flummoxed by the difficulty of getting around the city. It feels like they have the traffic problems of a much larger city, and there don’t seem to be good work-arounds in most cases.

You are correct, I was at UMD in 1981/82 and the north shore traffic was routed down Superior which became interstate 35. It was great for hitching a ride to the Twin Cities because of all the traffic and you could legally hitchhike on the sidewalk just down from the Radisson. Don't think we ever waited more than 15 minutes.

I also was a UMD student 81/82, and my first hitchhiking adventure was to the Cities and back. Very easy to find rides both ways! Led to much greater cross country treks following the Grateful Dead around. The foibles of youth!
