There's a discussion on that group about the usefulness of operating two separate Quetico forums. My opinion is that the Afficionados board should be folded into this one for a number of reasons:

1) The mandate/content are hardly indistinguishable.
2) The main Quetico board needs more participation IMO. It's my favourite forum. That's just me talking. Having two groups is dilutive.
3) My login frequently gets terminated from the Afficionados group for no apparent reason. Jackfish and Adam even intervened a couple of weeks ago on my behalf and got me connected again. Now I can view it but can't post nor respond to others. There's a glitch somewhere. I wonder how many others have crossed this bridge and just gave up and moved on.

And finally...the biggest reason of all...as a self-styled grammar Nazi, aficionado is really spelled with one F and such a dreadful transgression reflects poorly on all of us. I won't even visit another Quetico Lake pictograph after I noticed one contained a split infinitive.

I agree. I've not looked at any of the "additional forums" in a long time. Can't find posts and can't mark them all read so I never know what is new.

I agree with your arguments, and got a chuckle out of the grammar nazi bit.

That said, I could go either way. I do agree that the Quetico forum is my favorite sub forum on this site, and it’s the one I’m most excited to see new posts on. That’s probably the biggest reason to merge Quetico and Quetico Aficionados, in my opinion.

Ha! I am also a so-called member of the grammar police. They're, there, their... you're, your... lose, loose... "me and Bob went fishing", "I seen...". You name it, that kind of stuff drives me crazy, especially in anything official, like a work doc or newspaper article.

I've been a member of this board for 20 years and I never realized that aficionados was spelled with only one "f"... so I looked it up. Sure enough, it shows the word spelled with one "f"... BUT... it also shows it spelled with TWO "f"s. I've seen words like that before where the common spelling is one way, but it's acceptable the other way, but no one spells it the second way.

I say we change the name of the forum to "Quetico Experts". :)

Jackfish … right you are. Merriam-Webster has it spelled with 2 F’s and 1F … but it seems most other dictionaries have it with 1F.

Oxford, Collins, and MacMillan dictionaries all spell aficionado with 1 F.

I'll give this a "plus-one" :).

I seen it spelt with three f’s.

It seems to me the purpose of the separate forum was for Quetico veterans to share semi secret information on campsites, fishing and various other info. Perhaps new users would not realize that they could simply subscribe to gain access to the second forum. That may have made sense at one time, but I don't think it does any longer.

A few years back when the park superintendent, Trevor Gibb gave a presentation at Canoecopia, I believe he said the average age of the Quetico visitor was well over 60 years of age. Ten years from now, who is going to be visiting the park when all these people start retiring their paddles? Selfishly, we want to keep the park private with our own little secrets, but things always change for good or bad regardless of our wishes. Park numbers are definitely down from when I started visiting in the mid 80's, when you could hardly get a permit. As Argo stated, the separate forum is dilutive in nature and I think we should be promoting the park and trying to engage more paddlers into checking out this park resource. As more forms of social media compete for our attention, I think we should keep things more streamlined and I would vote for merging the two forums as Argo suggests.

I think this pretty spot on…poster Fishguts started the semi private group to freely share information such as camps, fishing spots with like minded people you sort of knew instead of posting to the entire web for the whole wide world to see. It was initially by invitation or recommendation to join. Once Fishguts left I think it became like the other forums where you can just ask to join and join.

I think it is fair to ask if it really serves a purpose anymore under the current circumstances? It doesn’t get much action. The world and info on the web has changed in the last 20 years…the cat’s already out of the bag so to speak already.

It’s Adam’s website he can do what he wants. As an original member of that group I don’t really care either way now. Patrick hasn’t participated for many years now either.

For what it's worth.

I share very little information about Quetico on the Quetico forum. It's basically telling every person on earth with an internet connection all the secrets Quetico has to offer. When I do write on there, I only generalize or discuss benign information. I can't offer info on great campsites, great lakes to fish on and other 'unknown' secrets it has to offer.

I did tell everything on the Afficionados forum though.
And if this forum is so obsolete, why am I writing on here.

I can't disagree with your thoughts either, I get that perspective as well. How would you feel if the forums got merged? As I said it isn't my website but usually Adam is good at listening.

Some might feel they posted info under the pretense it wouldn't be shared with a bigger group and now it might be?

I’m thinking you are wanting cross-points from another thread. There must be a grammar police out there. It ain’t a big deel if you spel something rong.

A number of years ago I suggested Quetico Afficionados be folded into the Quetico forum. It seemed to be a duplicate of the regular Q thread. My suggestion was not well received at that time. The idea that it was some secret site that allowed secretive information to be exchanged never made any sense to me since the thread is open to anyone.
Perhaps the idea to combine the two threads will come to fruition now. And some of us will be able to quit checking two threads for the same information.

But, but,

The aficionados forum is not searchable by google nor is it accessible by a casual reader thus making the information more private. It is more like a private chat.
But I agree that it is dying a slow death. I used it a lot when it was active.

Tumblehome is correct, when Pat set it up it was invite only. It still isn’t accessible by just anyone and doesn’t show up in searches anywhere as far as I know.

I know I initially posted different info depending on the forum. I didn’t see them as the same. I also see the benefit in merging into one forum.

What if we just close the Aficionados down to any more posts but make it legacy access? Don’t accept new members or posts, but only access allowed to those already with previous access.

Try to appease both sides?
