When I was a ranger at Sequoia National Park we came across bears begging for food from passing motorists. On a few occasions we were asked to clear a bear jam. We would approach a begging bear that looked lethargic and near death as motorists would feed it sandwiches. As we approached, the bear would recognize our uniforms and the patch on our sholders and it would transform itself into Lazarus and immeaditely run off. A few well pithed rocks followed the bear as it sauntered off toward the woods.

Seventy years ago, Yellowstone and Glacier had a problem with traffic bear jams. Black bears had their favorite spot on the side of the road that they would often fight over. It was not uncommon for park employees to place alka-seltzer in hamburger and then throw it out so that an adult bear would pick it up. The result was that the bear's stomach would soon loudly rumble followed by a belch and then loud flatulence. The cubs were most interested and confused by the stomach rumble, which would go on and on, often until the jam was broken up.
