I have a designated lake trout rod that I really like. What I can’t stand, though, is the heavy sinkers wrapping around the rod every time I move. I’d like to experiment with lead core line so I can ditch the sinkers and have an easier set-up generally.

Have any of you rigged up with lead core and does it eliminate the need for additional sinkers? I’ve never dealt with the stuff so is there anything else I should know about it?

Thanks!

You'd want to use trolling reels for leadcore. But yeah, it can get a lot of depth without sinkers. 5 ft or so per color segment is typical and there are 10 colors per spool.

folks typically have the right rods and reels for running lead core. I've thought of it up there, especially for trolling long passes over deeper water. I was bumping bottom in 70 ft with a big tail dancer last time I tried it for lake trout.
