Any suggestions on a day trip fishing expedition for walleye? Would love to paddle in for the day and back out in the evening if anyone has suggestions. Will be near Ely from June 8th to 15th.

Thanks.

My suggestion would be to get off the entry point lakes. As in strap the rod to the canoe, or whatever your portage system is, and leave them there until you get to the lake you want to be on. A line in the water is just going to slow you down.

You could go in on Kawishiwi and get to Polly. I know Malberg has the best walleye fishing in the area, but you are not going to want to go that far for a day trip. Brule is a beautiful lake and South Temperance is a long paddle, but it is very possible to do a there and back in one day and has lots of walleye.

I'm not as familiar with the Ely side, but keep in mind that there are a lot of people with the same thought. Get further in to find lakes with reduced fishing pressure.

I would suggest head out Lake One way and try around in those lakes.

If you’re up for a decent portage, Gabbro can be really good.

Good luck!!!

Tow across Burntside and scoot up to Cummings? Long portage, but with only daytrip gear it would be a breeze.

Do the roller portage into Triangle. Good eyes.personal favorite. Just can't do it anymore. That's a free be.

Another option is Big Moose. It definitely can be done as a day trip although it will be a long day, but well worth it.

You have two options: Take the Moose River to Big Moose or you can portage in using the hiking trail-I've done both.

Wood Lake produced a crazy amount of Walleye for me last year. It's a 15-20 min drive east from Ely proper.
