I would like to know if 12 lb line is a good all purpose line? We will be fishing for a pike,walleye,trout. Is 12 going to be ok , I plan on using a leader thanks Fred

in my opinion, 12 pound test is plenty, especially with a leader. different brands offer different pros and cons. i would stick with something by Trilene or Stren. Abrasion resistance is key for myself, i always inspect my line above the leader after every fish i hook.

i only use 4 pound mono (trilene sensitive) and a really low drag
depending on how you play them four pound will land anything. i even got a 29 inch flathead catfish last year on four pound.
one of the other good things about it is the fact walleyes cant see it well so they are more prone to picking up what ever your offering them.
but if your looking for strength to just mussle them in go with 12 pound. i use 12 on my river rod when im intentionally going for bigger cats. even got a 67 inch sturgeon this weekend fishing for cats on the st. croix this weekend in 12 pound (spider wire fussion).

I am like the Flyangler. I like to use four pound test and a light rod for most all my spinning needs. An option to consider. If you want to use the heavier lines try one of the newer ultra thin ultra strong braided lines. The smaller diameter will enhance bait and/or lure action without sacrificing strength. I have used it on my bait casting reels with very good success.

12 pound is okay for northerns and maybe lakers, but too heavy for the light touch of a walleye and usually too heavy for smallies as well.

If you have two reels that fit one rod, bring them along and change them for the type of fish you are going for.
