I am taking my daughter and son, their cousin and uncle to the BWCA in August. While they are not picky eaters I am looking for food suggestions so we don't have to survive on hot dogs, mac and cheese, and s'mores for 4 days.

Any creative ideas?

Find out what they like to eat and make that. Getting them invovled in the menu selection, preperation of the food prior to leaving, and possible helping make it in camp will make it funner for them. You might be surprised at what kids will eat if they get to choose it or help make it.

How about quesadillas? That new foil pack chicken is great. A pack of that, some quesadilla spices, tortillas, and cheese and you're set.

Pizza's always a hit. Boboli makes those pre-made crusts or you could make your own. Boboli also packages their sauce in plastic, or you can buy a plastic, squeeze bottle of Pizza Quick, or dehydrate your own. Pepperoni doesn't need refrigeration. Cheese will be fine without refrigeration for a few days.

Go to a bulk food store with the kids and let them pick out the stuff to make your own GORP. Or buy a little of everything, bring it home and have a taste test (dried papaya ... Mmmmm).

Make biscuits on a stick. You know, make up biscuit dough, roll it into a "snake", and twist around a stick to cook over a fire. If you want, spread some margarine on it and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.

How about stuffed crust? Make your biscuit "snake" and wrap it around string cheese. Squirt some maragarine on a piece of foil. Wrap up your dough & cheese. Place on the fire grate. Turn often. Cook until done (15 minutes?).

You could also bring some apples. They last a long time. How about some baby carrots? They last a couple day without refrigeration.

Thanks for all the ideas. I already do the tortilla's, baby carrots, and apples. I like the pizza idea and string cheese idea. I'll be bringing my reflector oven along as long as there isn't a fire ban the second week of August. I am relatively new to cooking with the oven so it will be fun to experiment.

On another board a Dad was talking about bring his daughter on a BWCA trip. Whenever she made a food comment the Dad would reply, "because this is a Boundary Waters ____!" For instance, the little girl said when Dad was cooking steaks on a firegrate, "Daddy, we don't cook steaks like that at home." Dad says, "Well, that's because this is a Boundary Waters' Steak!" Or "This macaroni and cheese is kinda gooey." "That's because it's Boundary Waters' Macaroni and Cheese!"

Thought that was a great response. :-)
