I'm heading up to BWCA in mid June and am going to try to do some fly fishing. I don't want to steal anyones fishing holes, but can someone tell me a good launching point for a 1 week trip focused on fly fishing?

One of my favorites trips is from Clearwater (#62) lake to Caribou and little Caribou lake and on through Pine, McFarland, John, Little John, East Pike, West Pike and on back to Clearwater. There have been days I could outfish the others with my flyrod. There are about 3 things to remember. Smallies LOVE crayfish and I do mean just about any pattern that is 1-1/2 to 2 inches long and full of lead. Flop that baby up around a tree and hold on. Second, the pike aren't moving real fast at that point so a slow fly is needed and white is almost always the prefered color. A 8-9 inch fur strip fly that sinks slow is a good bet. Look for water that is about 6 to 10 feet deep with some weeds starting to grow the big boys cruise that area looking for wounded bait and the water warms there faster. Finally, you can catch walleyes and lakers on a fly in the above mentioned areas. The eyes' seem to like things that are yellow in addition to leech looking patterns. The Lakers should be sipping mayflies off at that time of year so carry a few with you. I've carried 4wt's 6wt's and a 9wt before and all worked ok. I would recommend a 7wt with a fighting butt and a WF floating line. I taken 20+ pound in alot of those lakes so take wire bite guards or steel leaders. Have fun, I'll be there at the same time.
