What is the best way to catch trout? Is fly fishing a good idea? This will be my first trip up in the middle of May and I would like to try to catch some trout. I am also wondering how good is the fishing at this time of year?

Are you intending of fishing rivers/streams or lakes? Mid may is a good time for the fishing.
Lake trout will be shallow. Good method for them is simply drag a rapala behind you while paddling around (Gold or Silver are good colors) maybe some weight (bottom bouncer) to get it down a little bit.
Streams for brookies/speckies, earthworms are alway a good bet.... perhaps the same goes for lakes. As far as flies(dries), midges are always hatching, march browns, early light cahills, and small caddis are all possible. (Wet's), attractors are fair, small wooly buggers, zug-bugs, beadheads and so on.

Good luck
