I'm having trouble understanding how the portage wheels work for 16' motorboats on Basswood. How do you get the boat out of the water? What are the portages like and any other info about getting into Jackfish bay would be nice. I would love to see some pics of how this looks/works.

Thanks again,

You lift the front end of the boat as high as you can, slide the wheels under the boat towards the back with most of the boat still in the water, secure them with straps, then pull it out. (find your balance point before securing them in place)
If you invest the funds, the mounted portage wheels with motorcycle tires are the best and easiest to pull. These fold up on the boat for lake travel.
When using this style of portage wheel and approaching a portage, you fold them into the water, lock them in place, then continue toward shore until they bottom out.
Get out of the boat, pull it across.
You will have to go from Newton Lake into Pipestone Bay of Basswood, then motor over to Jackfish Bay as there is no longer a way to get there directly
Stop in the shop next time you're in Ely and we'll draw you a picture on how they work.

Mark,
I was kind of leaning toward the "Albert Einstein" of the BWCA, but Dalai Llama works too!! :)

I would like to build something similar, how do these fold in?

They don't fold in they flip up 180 degrees. The ones in the picture several posts above pivot on a pin in the front. You can see the large butterfly type bolt securing the wheels aft. When you get to your camp you slide them off the front pin and leave them at camp. Trembath's Machine & Welding in Ely makes them. This is another option. Held on with a ratchet strap.

I will add there are only a couple of portages that you would use portage wheels on Fall- Newton- Basswood and Back Bay- Pipestone.

I do see the butterfly bolts, so the wheels have two bolts that are secured under the gunwales then a rod is lashed between the two? I have used a canoe cart for my big disco174 and would like to have one for my Jon boat and one for my canoe. My boat is 430pounds empty, with a 120 pound motor probably another 100 pounds in battery and necessities. I believe I’d need to disperse the weight out a bit more than the two bolts. I could be wrong but I intend to figure it out, thank you very much this has been a big help.
