I am curious what people favorite and least favorite freeze dried foods are? Personally, the Eggs usually don't do it for me, and a spagetti and meat sauce usually hits the spot.

Like:
Beef Stroganoff
Sweet and Sour
Spaghetti w/meat sauce

Dislike:
Beef Stew
Lasagna (too gummy)
Egg dishes

I have gone almost completely away from freeze dried and have gone to store bought products and doing my own dehydrating. I can control the menu and costs much better and at similar weight. It usually is more satisfying meals and much easier to find at the local grocery store then having to go to the nearest REI or sporting goods store.

Between fresh meats and vegetables early and tuna and chicken from pouches later and dehydrated things in between I am eating better with greater satisfaction then when I did purely freeze dried. It may weigh a little more, but not enough to matter and the price and satisfaction more than makes up for the weight.

I agree with bogwalker. The are a lot of add only water foods out there. We get no bake cheese cakes at Aldi. Lots of noodle dishes and tuna.
The worst dried meal has got to be Turkey Tetrazinni.

I like the basic meals serving 2 for one man. Complication usually
brings failure. I prefer:
Chicken and Rice
Chicken and Noodles
and Any Asian dishes.
I just found a new cheaper brand at Gander Mountain
that was very healthy and inexpensive relative to the others.
On my trips I save freeze-dried for the last night and for
emergencies. Some day I will do as the others and dehydrate
my own. Good luck!

I too prefer the add water/meat type of meals for the BWCA. I have tried the powdered eggs before and when you put enough stuff in with them, ie... bacon bits, cheese, onion, spices and wrap them in a tortilla...they are not too bad! However, I still have about 5 lbs my school cafeteria gave me two years ago if anyone wants it... :-) No the store bought easy cook meals are the way to go for me, where all you add is the foil packed meat, and water. It is much easier now with the foil packed hamburger, chicken, tuna and things of that nature. It is much easier to supplement the menu if you catch fish and wish to have that instead... by the way... how many of you plan in your menu fish? Believing you will catch enough to eat?

I like to have fish at least once a day-lunch or dinner. We go to the BWCA mainly for the fishing. Fish hard all day long then toward the end of the day or throughout the day keep a couple of eaters for lunch/dinner. This tends to cut down on the extra weight of heavy dinners(usually the big meal of the day). I like to go with mostly fresh/frozen food in my food pack with some dry ice. I am not to fond of freeze dried foods. I work at Gander Mountain and have tried out most of them - some bad...some ok...but nothing replaces the good stuff from home. And for those of you looking for a good fish batter try out ShoreLunch brand and if you like it spicy try their Cajun ShoreLunch. This is the best.

montebfishing-in indiana for now...

I love all the freeze-dried, dehydrated foods-maybe I spent too much time in the military. And don't buy the dehydrated water. Boy, it only someone would have warned me.

I actually found dehydrated beer once. Brought a pack up there without reading it first.......the directions went something like this

add to 2 cups water
stir
add alcohol to taste....????

just to answer that burning question you all have......a shot of whiskey does not make good beer
:O)
