I am going to South Arm of Knife lake on the 20 of June. I hope you do not mind if i use your map as well. In return I will gladly report back spots that we have success at. I do have one question, in regards to your appreviation BLg or is it Big? Are you saying Big W, Big SM, or are you saying Bluegill? Or perhaps somthing else? Thanks for this valuable tool, I know it will enhance my trip.

Fantastic!! We'll be there a couple days and I would really like to get the boys on some fish. The boys have been doing all the planning for this trip from food to route to budget. It has been a good learning experience. Thanks for the map we'll put it to good use.

where are you camping I circled some of the sites that are pretty nice, If you get a chance fish that bay where I caught the bluegills it is excellent, I've seen 2 northern over 40 inches taken here and many many smallies over 20 inches, there are even largemouth in this bay. I've also seen moose in the narrows going into that bay good luck

Thanks mcsweem for sharing all this info. And grassguy are you guys leaving on the 19? I will only be a day behind. We will have three guys in a 3 man canoe and one in a solo, say hi if you see us. We are all in our early to mid 20's. Don't worry we are experienced outdoorsman and will be respectful. We are coming up to fish not to party.

Grassguy what is your entry point? We decided to enter from Seagull lake not the best of ideas but it will be fun.

I will definataly post a trip report and share spots we have success at as a thank you to everyone here who is always so helpful with advice.

So I have a couple more questions I figured I might ask. I have heard Knife lake is a very very clear lake. Can the walleyes be caught mid day up there? Or should I focus on trolling for Lake trout with a deep tail dancer? Also have you had success with those bluegills using leeches or should I bring some worms up? Sorry for all the questions, I am very excited haven't been to the BWCA in a few years due to things not working out so I am very pumped.

Yeah we will be going in on the 19th from Moose Lake. We'll look for you.

Thanks mcsweem for all the help. I'll see about having my son post a trip report as a wrap up to this adventure.

Why isn't entering on Sea Gull the "best of ideas?" I've done that route a number of times now and I have to say it's a nice route. If you have other questions about the the route itself, I'll try to help you out.

I will verify that Knife is a very clear lake. I can't speak to the walleye fishing midday, though. I've never bothered due to the fact that the lake IS so clear.

I have just heard it is a very hard way to take, and that Moose is faster and easier. But from Seagull lake should be fun and very pretty. Just meant by not the best of ideas because it takes longer, not because it wont be worth it :)

We caught the bluegills either on leeches or small jigs. If I was going for lakers I'd also bring a couple of dipsy divers also if the lakers have went a little deeper, taildancers are what I use most of the time. Water clarity on knife is like 21 or 22 feet we've caught walleyes during the day using floating jigs with walking sinkers the last couple of years it was in 14 to 18 feet of water. If coming from seagull I'd stick to the north arm we'd catch walleyes in little knife right past the narrows that come into knife. Wear your life jackets this time of the year knife is still cold, it will be 10 ago on the 16th that my buddy drowned on knife.

The goal is to stay on one of the island campsites on south arm, and go north from there every day. Any spots for big walleye? Also are you the same mcsweem I have seen post videos of knife lake on youtube? If you are should I bring some little spinners for brook trout up there?

06/15/2011 07:51PM
Yes those are my videos, there are no brookies in knife they were caught elsewhere

Bummer I didn't know there were bluegills in the lake so I was hoping I didn't know that there were brookies in Knife either. Not asking for any brook trout spots cause I know how sacred those are. My question is if I were to try casting for them in the creeks and rivers entering Knife would I have any luck, or would it be a waste of time?

06/16/2011 03:23PM
It would be a waste of time, because there are no brook trout in any of the streams or lakes near Knife Lake.

Since you're coming from Seagull there are brookies in Rog lake, between Seagull and Alpine. Might be worth a pass through, but the site there doesn't have much cover (damaged by the fire).

Ill keep that in mind. Maybe I can use some little spinners for Bluegills if I don't use them for brookies. Starting to get very very excited.

There were brookies in Rog. The GD small mouth carp infested the lake and it's no longer stocked and has lost it's trout lake designation. Might be a few left but wouldn't count on it.
