What the heck is textured vegetable protein. I found some new recipes for the outback oven that call for this stuff. Never seen it or heard of it. Has anyone used this stuff before? Can you get it at the local grocery store? What does it taste like?

TVP is designed to imitate meat. It is made from 100% soy flour with all oil extracted. There is a company called fantastic that uses it for their Chili, Sloppy joes and Taco meat. Its pretty good. Of course I haven't eaten meat in over 10 years so it probably sucks to you meat eaters. But it is light weight and if you buy the fantastic stuff its all seasoned and ready to go, just ad water and heat. (You do need one of those little cans of tomato paste for the Sloppy joes).

If you can't find it in your local stores, check out food co-ops. They always have it.

TVP - even as a meat eater, is one of the better substitutes that are out there.

Try it with salsa too, like a sloppy joy with a kick.
