Thanks, Nojoboro! It is a great article. When I went up in August, I took my dog, Willow. It was her first canoe trip. I took her out in a canoe on a small local lake earlier in the summer. She did awesome, even with ducks swimming everywhere (we do duck hunt with her) and she was interested in the ducks, but basically ignored them. Anyway, she did wonderful on the trip. A natural canoe dog. I don't think I would ever go on another canoe trip without her.
I sometimes just take my good fortune of canoe dogs for granted. I was with a friend a couple years back and he had two dogs with. I had Bernice. His dogs were like wild, they had no desire to get in a canoe. The scene wasn't pretty. Add the poop I picked up on the trail and all I was not impressed. Having a dog do well in a canoe takes some getting used to. But if you ignore your dog most of the time and then expect him/her to naturally obey or show any kind of obediance your fooling yourself. Bernice is like one of my kids to me. She does a lot and I try to keep her life full. She's the last dog I will have so I'm giving her all I can and she's giving it right back. Darren's article was pretty cool... it's obvious he spends a fair amout of his busy life with his dog(s). Thanks Nola!
