How long would it take me to get to the southern part of crooked lake by basswood falls from Mudro entry?

Is this a cool place to stay for a couple of days and how is the fishing in this area?

Is there a faster way up there/different entry point?

Thanks

5.5-6 hours, probably. About 3-3.5 hrs to where Horse River exits Horse Lake, and 2.5 more (with decent water levels) down Horse River to Lower Basswood Falls.

we just did this trip in mid august of 2012. we daytripped to LBF while basecamping on Horse. i agree on the travel time stated above. we fished and explored campsites for about 2 hours. We were the only ones there the whole afternoon. all campsites were open. the impression it left on my son and other people in the group was that it seemed sureal. just a really cool area. a person in my group did mention that staying at one of the sites really close to the falls would get annoying to listen to?? just something to consider.

we caught 4 eater northern and 1 walleye in that time frame. the sites right around LBF seemed nice however quite a few are elevated and don't recall any of them that had real great landings. (slippery north facing.) I would personally like to get back there for a few nights but i would definitely move north for a few nights as well.

even if there is a faster way, i would do this route..a lot of variety and great scenery along the way.

Table Rock is a nice layover site.

I have been on that route a few times and you certainly would not regret doing it. The area is beautiful and varied. The fishing was consistent. Once on it, we saw few people. Once, we had a hard time finding a campsite and frankly there were so many people camped around the falls that it was loud at night and we were never out of sight of others. But you would not regret that route - it is very beautiful.

between the falls and Wednesday bay is narrow in spots and half of it is in Canada. Although I caught a few it was hard to fish there as the current was strong and like MeatGun said it was crowded around the falls. from Mudro I went to the Boot, fairy, Gun way through the PMA to Iron, Crooked, to the Falls and through Basswood jackfish etc, back to Mudro. Once passed Fourtown we didn't see a lot of people until Iron. Had better fishing along the way than I did around the falls. Although a chore to get there Sunday lake was really good as was crooked around Saturday bay. Had some bad weather on Iron but caught a few fish there too. tom

Probably close to the same time to get there, possibly a little faster depending on how you portage, is getting a tow from fall lake with an outfit like packsack, which will take you up into basswood, then you go down the river. Very scenic, simple portages, just a different way to get there. I am very familiar with this way if you want to discuss it, drop me an email.

4fishin,

What time of year are you going? I am planning that same trip May 23-27. Never been to LBF's, but am anxious to check them out and hopefully find some big post spawn walleyes transitioning back into Crooked.

I have done it in 6 hours with my wife. We were moving a good tempo. We also wanted to prove to a buddy of mine that we could do it faster then him and I did years ago...

I have stayed there at Lower Basswood Falls 3 times. Twice on the point next to the falls on the US side. I would throw out a deeprunner everynight and tie my pole off. Caught a nice walleye everytime.

Good morning,

I have a trip planned into Crooked Lake on June 4th.

How is the fishing around this time? Is it a busy time to go? Any information or feedback is greatly appreciated!

It can be busy but not so much at that time, and even if it was the fishing is fantastic .

We did mudro entry to Lower basswood falls in 3:45 (checked photo time stamps) with 3 man canoe single portaging....it can be done.

lbf is too busy for my liking to camp, but definitely a must see

White,

Your entry date mid week is good, likely not a problem to find a site around the falls that day, but can be full often.

What is the best way to fish the East end of Crooked BassPro, we have always passed though but perhaps we should try to fish it a bit this year.

I've lived in Ely for 3 years and went to Vermillion Community College. I know the spring time can create heavy water flow with snow melt and rain.

We are going to be going down the Horse River and Lower Basswood Falls. How is the water current this time of year? Is it a problem to paddle coming out?

Rich, there are certainly a few spots that you should fish in eastern Crooked if you are not in a hurry/have your gear out and ready.

Send me an email if you want, I am very familiar with that lake.

Hey Buz:
Heading to Crooked this June, have followed a number of your comments and sure looks like you know Crooked. You mentioned some email advice in your last post in 2013. Any chance we could pick your Big Brain for some general direction on how to approach Crooked?
