Anyone have any tips on finding & fishing for BIG pike in late summer? We catch plenty of smaller ones in the shallow weedbeds, but have yet to find that "monster". I think they are in deeper, cooler water in late July (when we will be there). What are the best ways to catch them?
Ideally you want to look for three factors. Cover (caggabe weeds), debth, and transitional points (quick access to deep water). The best thing you can find is a bay that has access to deep water and has cabbage weeds that come about 3 feet from the surface. The cabbage will end as the water deepens, this is where you want to hit. Most people fish the visible weeds along the shores, and catch "hammer handles", but for the big ones, cabbage in open water in 10-15 foot with deep water near by; you can't go wrong. I use traditional red/white daredevil spoons tipped with a white trailer for open water and in the thick stuff I use 1 oz white/red spinnerbaits or Johnson Silver minnows tipped with a white trailer. Let me know how you do.
