You get south of Brainerd toward Mille lacs you get some of the ash trees turning yellow and a few maples just getting a hint of color change. Some of that is it because it was so dry here.
Last year colors were a little late. Will see what happens the next few weeks. It seems like you get a rain in the fall and over night you have color everywhere.
Its coming soon.

quote ducks: "crossing our fingers and hoping it speeds up fast and there is some color next weekend. We are going up 2 weeks earlier than normal partly because we are always there after peak."
I think you are going to be ahead of the peak.

Was on the Vera to Ensign portage as far back as August 23rd and we all remarked at the end that there was a hint of fall showing on that portage (but that portage alone). Trees were just starting to turn and there were a good number of fallen leaves already on the ground. Why just there and why that early?

quote PINETREE: "Bear Head Lake State Park by Ely
Leaf color:
0-10% turned.
"
We won't hit peak but I'm still hoping for some good color. Especially the reds and oranges that are always gone when we've gone the 1st weekend in Oct. The state park report was updated 5 days ago and we still have 5 days until we get up there. One of my favorite movie quotes is from Dumb and Dumber when she tells him his odds are 1 in a million and he says "so you're saying there's a chance" :)

I think you will be perfect for leave colors.
Sometimes after its been cooled down for awhile you get lucky and the water is dead calm, but cold. Maybe hot, maybe snow, whi knows.

quote gutmon: "One of the later dates for fall color that I can remember.
WhiteWolf- got any data?"
I agree. I just think it has something to do with most everything being about a month behind from the cold spring which which was the 3rd coldest out of 119 recorded springs for MN.
I did find this for avg MN peak color.

Just got back from the Gunflint area and than Isabella lake country.
It seemed in the last three days you could just watch the colors starting to show up,especially on the Maples. Some tree had very good color.
Now that said is just starting and were about 10% turned, but I think things are speeding up. I still think about the end of Sept. it will peak.
It poured now today super hard at Isabella today-probably close to 2 inches of rain maybe in a small area. But sometimes after a rain it seems like it just washes the green away-now I have no idea if rain can hasten the change of colors.

gunflint trail just a couple hundred yards before the Seagull Guard Station and Larch Creek entry point. this area burned in the cavity lake and ham lake fires so the standing blackened trees make a beautiful contrast to the fall colors."
Its like the two best weeks of the year our before us now. Enjoy.
Nice to see a photo gallery of color. Thanks.

The shift had just started when we headed in to the lakes. At first we just saw a few maples just turning on the tips. By the end of the trip the birch had just burst into a wave of gold.
Feeling really lucky this year that I will be able to enjoy Fall colors twice. Once up there and once at home.

It is getting there very slowly this year.
Down in the Mille lacs area the Maples are turning, but many of the other trees still dark green.
Got up to Longville, and maples looking more color, but there also underbrush and other tree still green. We had all this rain now and it suppose to be cooler tonight. I think the changes will start in speeding up.
How is the Ely-Grand Marais doing with the paint brush?

I drove from Ely today and spent the afternoon at Hawk Ridge in Duluth then drove back through Beaver Bay. The colors were peak a mile or two inland from Lake Superior around the Sawtooth Mountains Cemetery near Beaver Bay. Lots of bright red and orange. Duluth looked good from Hawk Ridge. Ely may be at peak now but many maples and birch have already shed. Looking for some sunshine to light whats left this week. All these areas are nice and I really like the way the woods smell when it's damp. It is nice to see the migrating birds too.

That fall smell in the woods in the fall is awesome as you mentioned. We should bottle it.

quote gutmon: "Drove from Brainerd to Grand Rapids yesterday- PEAK COLOR!
This would be the weekend to get out in central/north central MN for color."
The Walker-Grand Rapids-Mille lacss area with all its maples is a great fall drive.
