Hey folks,

Thought I'd just start a new thread to kick this one off. We have our family BWCA trips set (there are others but that's another thread :) Here they are:

1. EP 16 LIS - Little Loon Lake; Memorial Day weekend (23-26th)
2. EP 38 Sawbill - Cherokee; July 4 - 7th
3. EP 23 Mudro - either Horse/BW falls area or Fourtown to Boot/Gun,etc

You're all welcome to join us if your plans coincide or just overlap for any point of time. We generally paddle in to the destination and base camp (that's as far as I can get everyone :).

If anyone has other routes that they are planning with their families, please feel free to post them also --- I'm always looking for new ideas! Thanks and happy paddling. (Spring is on the way.....eventually)

My wife, 6 year old daughter and I plan to take a few trips this year, including our first to the BW.

EP 47 Lizz Lake, Aug 17-22

We haven't scheduled the others, but I plan to do the Turtle Flambeau flowage, Lost Canoe Lake (NHAL), and Sylvania Wilderness.

If you do go to Lost canoe lake with the kids, portage into Pallet, You need a special permit to fish, but you can catch smallmouth until you dont want to anymore. I love that lake.

We have three kids, Daughter (12) and 2 sons (9 and 6) - Last year, I took a trip with my oldest daughter to the BW. It was a really special time for us to spend together. This year I am going to try to take a separate trip with each one. I think it will be really special, instead of one trip with all of us. The trips are shorter, but cool. Mom will car camp, but would prefer a hotel.

So here is our plan.

June 12 - 15 - 9 yr old and I EP 64 East Bearskin. Alder Peirz and more I am sure.

June 25 - 30 - Daughter and I - We invited a freind and her dad this year. EP 14 loop to EP 16 (maybe) or an out and back from EP 14 if we think this is too much.

I have not set a date yet with the 6 yr old, but we will do Pallet lake(NAHL WI) and catch SMbass until we don't want to anymore.

Do you get the permit there? I believe I read that they have a station at which you check in before and after you fish. Is that right?

The permit station is at the boat landing on Escanaba lake. Escanaba you also need a permit. Lost canoe, Palette and Escanaba are all conected by short portages. The permit is free and you are included in a study, you have to report your catch when you are done fishing. SM bass have to be over 22 inches so it is catch and release mostly. You keep track of fish under 16 inches, over 16 inches and over 20. we catch just as many over 16 as under, but have not gotten a 20 incher yet. We have caught many at 19 though and they are pretty big. So you have to check in to the permit station before and after fishing pallet lake or Escanaba lake.

Did you mean EP 14 for LIS? EP16 is nina moose river north would be a tougher trip to get too little loon from ep16. If you did already get a permit for 16, there are great kid friendly destinations from there.

We did EP 16 up to Agnes last Labor Day. Really nice but a bit tiring for our kids, 9 & 11 (and us parents too!).

Where is lost canoe lake? Just not familiar with that one...sounds like fun though!

Lost Canoe Lake is in the Northern Highlands American Legion State Forest near Boulder Junction, WI.

Thanks cycle003! I just met a couple of counselors from Manitou-wish YMCA camp up near there and it looks like excellent paddling too!

Will you be able to get in there with the road work?

Maybe check this out, maybe you know this.

Yeah, I've been waiting on some confirmation that there would be reasonably easy access. Mike's message from the outfitter helped me decide to go ahead and book.

The Lizz Lake entry is one that I've wanted to do for some time. We'll have some time in August before the fair is in full swing...hmmm. Thanks for the idea!

How was your weekend on Cherokee? I hope you didn't get dumped on too much and that you had a good time/found a good campsite. The lake was so empty when we were there but I suspect it filled up for the weekend. Was fun to run in to you and family on the Ada Lake portage as my husband and I were exiting from our Cherokee trip.

Nice meeting you and your husband as well! We were dumped on :) so we stayed in the tent and around camp mostly exploring and fishing from shore. We stayed on the southern half of the lake on an island site just north of Cherokee creek. Beautiful spot but regretted not getting to see rest of the lake due to weather. Amazing thunder storms that rolled overhead. We were dumped on again on Sunday after portaging out and had to take shelter on one of the "northern" islands on Sawbill to sit out the rain/thunder. What an adventure -- one our kids are still talking about :) Sawbill campground and the outfitter store (especially the hot showers) were great havens of civilization to return to and dry out......will look for you folks again this summer if possible! Always good to run into others from this community.

You must have stayed just north of the site we were on. We camped on the peninsula site right near Cherokee Creek with the two rock points jutting out.

I wondered if everyone was trapped in camp during the weather. Glad your kids see it as adventurous! We paddled all the way out Friday instead of stopping on the north end of Sawbill as we had planned. We were tired of feeling damp and knew there was the potential for big storms. Stayed in the Sawbill campground Fri and Sat night. Then bailed out and went to a hotel in Grand Marais for our final night on Sunday. After Sat storms, our tent finally cried uncle and got wet. We are still drying out gear at home.

We will be on a family trip in early August in the Cross Bay/Long Island/Frost area. Hope to run in to some folks then too.

Those sound like great lakes to be on! Hope the flies subside by then -- we'll be probably about a week behind you but going in Lake One/Two with another family. Doesn't look like water levels will be subsiding anytime soon either :) Minnehaha down here is still flooded! Have fun -- would love to get into Long and Frost at some point.

We had a great time! Nice walleye and SM that last morning before breaking camp :)

Just a little bump on this one as we are going in Saturday. Camping at Fenske night before. Anyone in the vicinity, we will have a Wenonah Champlain, flesh-toned with Flyin Moose and Inukshuk decals bow & stern. Kids are 12 and 10 and my wife and I will be the tired (but happy :) adults that you see at the campsite. Stop in if you are in the area -- most likely camping on southern end of Horse. Should be great weather.

Have a great trip! We head in to Lake One on Sat for a quick trip. Our 19 yr old couldn't make it on any of the other trips so we planned a short one for him. Hoping to camp on Lake Three somewhere.

We'll have one canoe with a flying Moose - a green Wenonah Spirit II - and one without - Bell Northwind. Two adults and two teens. Though I guess the 19 yr old is adult age now :-)

We'll be in and out quick , likely hanging out in Ely on Monday afternoon.

You have a great trip too! We were there just a week and half ago with brux's family. We stayed in the southern part of the lake on one of the island sites. Great fishing in the channels as well as the channel on east side heading up to Lake Four ( good fishing in Lake Four before the portage to Hudson). Have fun!
