Truck bed liner?
Last year I added a coat of poly resin to the stems on my canoe, easy, cheap, redoable. This year I used Duplicolor Bed Coating \

A little more runny than the poly resin but I think it came out well. Now to see if it's durable. Wanted to use Herculiner (previous good experience on my old truck), but smallest can is a quart.

Does it come in other colors?

Looks like flat black only. I know other bed liners are available in colors, I wanted the smallest amount available. Previous experience with urethane coatings taught me they do not store well after opening.

butthead, Did you have Keel Easy on the canoe prior to doing this?
Looks like you peeled something else off of the canoe and then started doing this? Just curious, My Keel Easy has a lot of dings after several trips.

Sunny, I had coated the stems last year with black colored polyester resin. Brushed it on and was as messy as could be expected from a 2 part resin. My idea is a simple paint on stem layer that can be removed and re applied, cheap, easy. The bed liner is a neater application, spray can, 1 part water base urethane, easy to clean up. Now to see how it stands up to my paddling style.

PS: The poly resin worked very well, a few chipped spots after 4 long trips, just more difficult to apply. bh

Don't waste your time. My father has been in the auto industry for over 40 years he swears by rubberized undercoating (sometimes has price multiplied by branding it as flex seal). P.S. He buys this and Napa brake cleaner by the case

"Don't waste your time."

My time and actual field use. As far as automotive industry interest, been dabbling in it since 1966. First experience with spray bed-lining, 1993.

Actually worked better than the coat of polyvinyl resin used before. Not a replacement for skid plates or KeelEasy, but another way to offset the inevitable results of tripping. Flexible enough that gouges transitioning from skincoat to coated area did not chip, Photos after short field trial off the Gunflint.
Easy application and repair, for reasonable amount of extra protection.

OS48, thanks for linking OneMatch's method.

I am trying the Rustoleum product as skid plates for my Prism. I sanded with 150 and then 400. Then wiped it down with acetone. Then applied several thin coats over six hours on Saturday night, 7/5/14. It looks pretty nice. First water dip will be next weekend...hopefully.

I just ordered a product called Grizzlygrip for my skids. You can order it by the pint(smooth version)online with many colors to choose from. I got camouflage green for my royalex Old Country. I will keep you guys informed as to the results. Also... when ordering online, select "fine" for the grit but in the comments sections say Null or tell them to not add any rubber or grit. They will send you only the smooth coating. Get a good foam roller too. For a pint and shipping the total was $18. I don't need a $100 gallon size. Also, Duraback sells colored no grit liner as well by the gallon. If you want a quart, order the primer in quart size and tell them in the comments section of your order form that you want the Duraback non grit/rubber coating in your choice of color instead of the primer. I called them and they told me to order it that way. It's $40 for the quart. I thought that Grizzly coatings was very reasonable and had great reviews.

I've used Flex Seal on a couple boats over the last 5 or so years with good results. Easy, relatively inexpensive and it works; that's good enough for me!

I suggest just adding thin strips of fiberglass cloth and resin when your stems get worn. Let it cure sand to smoothness (buff if you want). Simple, rugged, largely invisible and does not affect the lines of your hull.

I just put a piece of keeleze on my SR last weekend. Worked pretty slick with the heat gun and doesn't look like a big honker keel plate one sees at outfitters. Toughest part was getting the backing off....end up putting it in the freezer for a bit. Rutabaga sells it by the foot and I believe there is a video on you tube showing how to put it on..... also various colors It goes in the water Friday morning so I will let you know in a week how it dealt with the "skinny water" on Homer Lake
