I'm pretty happy tonight. I've had major issues with the device over the years with uploading routes. Mostly due to Garmin's pathetic manual, which mentions nothing about how to delete waypoints, except one at a time.

Anyway, I did the portage/campsite upload long ago, which worked fine. However, when I would go to upload a route from my MapSource software, it would truncate the route or do other maddening things because the internal memory was full. It didn't say that the "memory" was the internal one or the SD card.

I wiped the SD card (a 6 or 12 mb one - I don't remember), and I would always get the same error. Could not figure it out.

Doing research online this afternoon, I found out that the waypoints are stored in the INTERNAL memory of the device - NOT the SD card. So, I deleted the waypoints in the device, and only uploaded the ones surrounding my route, and it worked great - the FIRST TIME!

I believe this model can only handle either 500 or 1,000 waypoints. The way that the portage/site upload records in the device is WAYPOINTS. The upload on the full BWCA is over 3,800 waypoints, which causes the device to think that it's internal memory is full.

I'm not a device programmer, but jeez, wouldn't make sense to be able to store the waypoints on the SD card instead of the internal memory of the device?

Have a couple of beers, and damn, you can figure out about anything!

Tomster -

You might want to look into points-of-interest instead of waypoints. Here's a post from a few years ago where I mentioned the limitations of a garmin GPSr.
