Heavy Canoe and I are headed to Rocky Mountain National Park this summer for a different type of back country experience. We both prefer to hang. Our last night is going to prove to be a challenge = we will be above the tree line. There are pits with stone walls around them for tents. My idea is to anchor the hammocks on eirher side of the pit. Worst case I am bringing a ground cloth. Any ideas? Am I crazy?

Not at all. If push comes to shove, take a pad instead of an underquilt and use the pad on the ground if you have to.

I would suggest you bring some longer tree straps just incase the rocks are far apart. I like the idea of the pad.

Yes...the telescoping aluminum type.

If you have access, bring some climbing protection. A few nuts and cams could make hanging a snap. Long straps are a good idea if you havent seen the spots you want to hang.

bring climbing rock anchors. I have seen them used, but have never done it myself.

Somewhere I've seen guys hanging from their poles. Obviously they have to get secured somehow...it also not worth wrecking your poles.

+1 on the climbing gear.
