I think we caught walleye, lakers, and smallmouth in Seagull.

We did well on Jap lake for lakers.
Alpine Lake for Walleye.
Rog lake's got brookies and smallmouth.

WHAT WORKED BEST FOR BAIT ON SEAGULL,AND ALPINE? ALSO WHAT ARE THE CAMP SITES LIKE ON ALPINE? THANKS FRED

We mainly just paddled across Seagull Lake for lack of wanting to be on an entry lake and big water. On the north side of the island in the center of the lake we cast a bit, mostly shad raps and rapalas while waiting out the wind (Near the "alleged" pictographs) We also towed bottom bouncers with floating rapalas while fighting waves across the big water.

On Alpine we used jigs and leeches... try the narrows to the north and where the river comes in from Jasper. We didn't Camp on Alpine but made the portage to Jasper and camped at the first site (which is a nice one) Then portaged back and did some fishing once our camp was set up. Jasper didn't seem very productive for us. Alpine was.

We made it from the Boat Launch on Seagull Lake through Rog, Alpine, onto Jasper... Setup camp, Fished some on Jasper, a smaller lake to the south, and Alpine... all on day 1. It's possible. But we like to travel... might not be the thing for others. We didn't check out any sites on Alpine we were still covering gound at that point... their may be nice ones there. I liked the one on Jasper though.

Seagull can get rough and take some time to cross or wait till it's not so rough.

Last time I was in the BWCA, I didn't have very much luck fishing. My family and I will be renting a cabin on seagull. Can anyone recommends spots and bait for seagull please? We might portage to one or two neighboring lakes.. But for the most part remain on seagull and hope for calm days.

Thanks!

i,ve been on sea gull many many times. first of all i would NOT camp on jasper i went through last opener on my way to knife lake. after the fire it looks like a bomb went off not very picturesque , more so on jasper than any other lake... rog has 1 camp site and there are nice brookies in there but timeing is everything with rog lake . i've done very good on sea gull , yes the waves can get rollin on the west end but thats where i,ve had my best fishing. for an entry point lake it doesnt get much better than sea gull i have landed 2 pike over #14 both released good lake trout fishing from shore or trolling up to #7-#8 and very good walleye fishing.. to get away from the wind i would try a camp site on the north to north west side kind of by the 100 rod portage to alpine. or an island. and the walleyes should be kind of close to that area. like i said i've gone into knife alot and sea gull is the next best fishing lake on that journey, bar none

Well that sounds encouraging, thanks.

So the west side and close to the portage to alpine.. I'm sure my group would be happy to catch anything. Whats the easiest fish, or must abundant and any suggestions on bait, technique and other locations closer to my cabin on the east side for august?

for august ? i,m up there on the opener or passing though to knife lake. if you dont mind paddleing troll from the alpine portage towards the rog portage and past thats. its a great stretch. in august try a suspending diving crank bait when you make turns it will stay in the strike zone and the pause and go can really trigger them. dont be surprise if you get some nice pike. lakers may be a bit deeper. my favorite lure is a 7" black and gold rapala the thinner type model with a 12"-18" leader or a good driving crank bait , i like bomber alot. you can troll fast and they dont tweak out they dive straight and true. excalibers are good too but any brand thats suspends could be the ticket in august. just have your front guy look for rocks and stay outside them if you have floateing crank baits u just stop paddeling they will float up and paddel slow till your front guy doesnt see rocks anymore but stay in touch with the shoreline to some degree. i wish i was going this year but i'll be up there next opener for sure. hit me back with anymore questions, seagull lake is a great lake but respect the wind. and always keep a calm head.

Thanks shock! Since you've been so open with details, I will post what Iv saved from another forum. Between yours, and this other fellows recommendations. I think our chances of catching something has dramatically gone up.

""Alpine, Jasper, Ogish, Red Rock, and South Arm of Knife Lake are the lakes you want to focus on and you will catch plenty (as long as you know how).

The bay that the outfitters rests in (NE corner of lake) is actually really good for Walleye, if the wind is from the west: the fish just seem to stack up in the bay. And it has a mostly sandy bottom, which is convenient for fishing lindy rigs.

I know a lot of people fish the rocky flats between fishook and three mile island (particularly the water between the north ends of the islands, not far from where the BWCA boundary sign is-which you'll see- using slip bobbers and leeches. I have personally never tried this.

There are large areas of very open, very deep water, which you may want to avoid if you're not looking for lakers. In particular, the area east of fishook island, and west of eagle's nest island.

For smallmouth, you will have fine luck crusing just about any shoreline with structure: trees & rocks. There is a nice bay on the north side of the lake (North Bay) that is good. But I have caught fish in many of the small, unnamed bays. The islands just North and west of Three Mile Island have great structure. I fish almost exclusively torpedos. The small ones seem to work better than the large ones. No doubt you'll hook into some little fish, since there are so many of them, but hopefully you'll manage some bigger smallmouth too.

I have not fished extensively on the SW side of the lake, so can't tell you much about that.

Mediation and Rog lake both hold trout, should you be interested in a little day trip. Rog has been know to hold many, large brown, although I have never managed to entice any of them to bite. Bringing a fly rod???

I don't think the type of presentation makes a huge difference: jigs, spinners, minnows, crawlers, leeches, etc. can all be effective. I would tend to go with shiners, when available, and leeches.

Seagull Outfitters has a room designated as the map room, where they take their customers to talk to them about fishing the lake"".

CONFIDENCE IS A BIG PART OF FISHING IN MY OPINION. AND DEBBIE AT SEAGULL OUTFITTERS IS THE BEST ON THE TRAIL. NO DOUBT.. ONCE I LEAVE SEAGULL THERE'S NO OTHER LAKE THEN THE SOUTH ARM OF KNIFE JUST TOO MUCH FUN FOR A BWCA JUNKIE. BUT MOST OF THE TIME I AM FISHING OPENERS. NOT AUGUST. HAVE FUN AND BE SAFE ALWAYS WERE YOUR VEST ON THAT LAKE. IF YOU HAVE A DOCK WHERE U STAY JUST GET SOME SUCKER MINNOWS IF POSSIBLE(OR ANY LIVE BAIT WITH SIZE) AND FISH THEM UNDER A FLOAT WITH STEEL LEADER(I CUT OFF THE SNAP AND TIE DIRECT TO THE HOOK) YOU MIGHT GET ONE CRUISING THROUGH WHILE YOUR JUST RELAXING. I'M ALREADY JEALOUS HAVE FUN

HEY REBAR.. HERES A GOOD STORY I WENT INTO ROG OPENER 2001. I GOT 5 BROOKIES FOR THE TRIP, BEFORE THIS TRIP MY BIGGEST BROOKIE WAS 16" ABOUT #1 1/2 MY FIRST BROOKIE ON THIS TRIP WAS #2-8 ON A DIGITAL SCALE MY NEXT #2-10 THEN A #3-0 THEN A #3-8 AND THEN A #3-14 WHICH I RELEASED AND PUT THE #3-8 ON THE WALL, ALL IN THAT ORDER IT WAS AWESOME BUT AFTER 2 DAYS IT WENT DEAD. THIS WAS ONE OF THOSE FREAK TIMING THINGS. DNR SAY STOCKED BROOOKIES DONT LIVE PAST 5 YEARS AND THEN DIE OF NATUARL CAUSES??????????? I HAVE MANY STORIES I'M 51 AND BEEN GOING IN SINCE I WAS 27. OH THERE ARE SOME NICE SMALLYS IN THERE THEY DO GET FAT ON THE STOCKED BROOK TROUT FRY(DEBBIE AT SEAGULL OUTFITTERS HAS FISHED THAT LAKE) AND THERE HAS NAVER BEEN ANY BROWNS STOCKED IN THAT LAKE. MAYBE JAP BUT NOT ROG
