OP Do yourself a favor and post some better info, like what the boat is, what the motor is and some pics would really help as well.

This seems like a big gamble and I can't say that I agree with their tactics. Personally I think that used items lose about half their value as soon as you can no longer call them new and a month of near continuous use is nowhere near new. They should have just rented it if they had no intention of keeping it long-term.

I agree... Instead of renting, he should have bought used equipment. I have seen old town sport square sterns go for $600-$1000 and 4 hp four strokes go for about the same.

Could have bought used and sold for about the same. I would never buy brand new unless it was a long term investment.
