There is a large fire in the SW corner. Yesterdays map showed it from Manitoba all the way east to Jigsaw. It was part way up Bulging too. Broken Arrow and Haggart look to be gone. It will certainly be changing a lot of trip plans.

Jigsaw suffered a fire in 2009. It'll be sad if the recovery is halted by this new fire.

Wow. I heard this today on NPR and found this too. If it moves any further eastward towards the Aegans I may be looking at another route in June.

The May 9 update on the fire showed it stretching all the way from Upper Broken Arrow then SE to Blueberry in the SE corner of the park.The map should be updated again by 1:00 PM Tuesday.

This is the area where I was planning on going in Sept. That is a big fire. I assume a lot of the blow down was very ripe and contributed.

The map shows the fire all the way to the SE border of the park including lakes such as South Aegean and possibly the very southern end of Aegean.

They need a good rain over the next few days to put this thing out. RED3 is well over 100,000 acres now.

Wow. I hope no one got caught SW of Paull Lake in that area that was encircled and enveloped.

This is very sad. The fact is that after all the winter snow damage and downfall a few years back, it was only a matter of time. The huge amount of fuel that the forest had on the ground was a fire waiting to happen. A few years back, after the winter storm we went through a large part of this area. I also have entered via Beresford Lake Entry before from the Manitoba side....what a mess.

Mother nature's way of cleaning up the mess I guess.

I was talking with Harlan yesterday and apparently it was snowing. So hopefully that "heavy" rain will help to put the fire out.
I feel very fortunate to have paddled Haggart and Broken Arrow last summer because it will be quite a while before that area recovers from what sounds like a devastating fire. Those two lakes are amongst the most beautiful in the park in my opinion.

I concur. I haven't heard any reports of trapped campers, so maybe that is a small bit of good news.

Glad I saw the areas I did a couple years ago. I do hope the fire has stopped growing.

Fire is a reality up here....it's what makes this forest so special. The fire is doing it's thing and has burned some nice paddling routes. They'll come back though as they always do. WCPP is a massive park and there are plenty of amazing areas to see and explore.

Fire crews and water bombers are in the area so it will be managed as best as it can be.

The majority of the park is still open and paddlers are already setting out. Looks like another great year up here!

Solotrip, I understand. But I still will miss some stuff. Depending on how it ends up, might get a pretty campsite on one side, and moose watching and blueberry fields on the other side.

Plenty of canoe routes that have not been impacted by the fire. Look at the areas north of the Gammon River for what I feel are the best in the park. Two newer routes are the Irvine Loop above Royd and the Minjim Route from Royd to North Prairie. I thought my Walking Stick haunts would remain my private bushwhacking area but the Craven to Dunstan route is getting interest from the park office.

Glad to hear about the new Walking Stick route and others. Are most of the other southern routes closed off or burned over.

The fire maps seem to show that Leano to Paull to Haven is north of the fire and almost all north of the Gammon River is OK. A burned route takes a lot of work to keep clear as trees with weakened root systems keep falling down.

It looks like the southern routes out of Johnson, Onnie and Leano or pretty much open. The fire looks like it touched the western edges of Aegean and Paull but much of it was unscarred by fire.

The first clear day to get a good satellite picture of the fire. You have to do a little zooming in and out to find the boundaries.

Looks like the fire came up the east side of Walking Stick Creek and along side the east side of the lake. It is so much bare rock at that point the fire probably could be contained there. I think my 5 star camp on the east side may have burned up but otherwise the impact looked to be minimal for the future travelers to Walking Stick and the other Walleye Lakes in that area.

I see that the restricted fire ban has been lifted and that the entry points that were closed because of the RED3 fire are open again.
